college home courses

once more i am asking about college golf- sorry to be a continual pain, but we dont really get much info on it over here.

with each college they all have a home course, where they spend most of their time practicing.

which colleges have the best, and most impressive facilities? Which ones use world famous courses? i figure if im playing there (hypothetically) for four years, it might as well be somewhere grand.

for example, university of southern california use riviera which i believe has hosted majors.

thanks

University of Rochester uses Oak Hill

Oklahoma State uses Karsten Creek

Harvard plays at The Country Club

Akron plays at Firestone

Both Northwestern and Minnesota have amazing multi million dollar indoor facilities, which is almost as good as having a top tier course because you can practice in the winter, as well as at night...

I go to UNLV and know that the team plays at Southern Highlands mainly which is a very expensive, very private golf course which has hosted the Las Vegas Invitational. They also get to play a decent amount of times at Shadow Creek, Lake Las Vegas courses, the two TPC courses (Canyons and Summerlin) and a few others.

Not to argue, as you guys are on a VERY short list for toughest (as well as best) collegiate courses...

But Northern Illinois plays at Rich Harvest Farms. For anyone doubting the courses difficulty, its actually bordering absurd. For reference see this years NCAA Central Regional.

Minor threadjack. I hope no one minds.

Has anyone played the University of Texas Golf Club course ?

I know it is still a work in progress having only opened in 2004 (for example, clubhouse construction), but I was wondering how the course plays.

The Longhorn team facilities look amazing:

And the clubhouse (current, then under construction) looks to be a monster:

The UT Golf Club is indeed pretty impressive, aside from the fact that it's a good 30 minute drive from campus. There are some nice risk-reward holes, particulary #13. Number 5 is brutal from the tips. The couple of times I've played there, conditions have been great. They recently made a few modifications that I think actually make the course play a bit easier. Very Fazio-esque to me, good bit of elevation change. Greens have always rolled pretty fast out there. Unfortunately the fairways are quickly becoming lined with pricey homes.

Before my dad died, we had a tradition of visiting college courses and collecting pin flags. I've been able to see some nice facilities as a result of that. Here's my top 5 so far...

1. Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club - Duke University (Durham, NC)

2. University of Texas Golf Club (Austin, TX)

3. The Rawls Course - Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX)

4. Birdwood - University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA)

5. Traditions Club - Texas A&M (College Station, TX)

Honorable Mention - Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech, Penn State

There are plenty of classics that I haven't had the chance to visit (Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, some of the SEC schools), so I have plenty of pit stops to make on future road trips.

I played at Philmont CC when I played my college golf. Nice old style 36 hole layout and the members could not have treated us any better than they did.

Penn State has two courses (Blue and White) which are quite nice.

Princeton's home course is a quirky layout, but in nice shape and a lot of fun.

Dartmouth plays out of Hanover CC (two blocks from campus), a nice old D. Ross design with tough greens.

The University of Oregon plays at Eugene Country Club, which is ranked in the Top 40 on Golf Digest's Top 100 Courses in America. It is also set to host the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur.

I knew I was forgetting a good one out west. Thanks

I don't know about the best, but the worst course...at least in relation to the size and quality of the athletic department has got to go to Indiana University. I picked up the game while getting my undergrad there. I didn't appreciate course quality then, but having gone back a few times, it's horrible. It was designed prior to 1950 by the athletic director at the time who basically hired a crew and told them where to dig. He clearly had limited talent for golf course design. It's beyond me how a school like IU can't get a quality course near campus.

As much as I hate to admit it, I like Purdue's course quite a bit. It's a Pete Dye design, but is tricked up as much as any Dye course I have ever seen. Still it's fun to play if you like pain.

I believe the Kampen Course is hosting the NCAA's this year...

I actually looked very hard at playing for Indiana theya re about 35th ranked or somewhere in there. the course isnt great but they can get it into great condition. the practice facility for team only is amazing though. the Kampen course at purdue is one of the toughest ive ever played. i took a visit there too... its just soo cold... it was the first week in october and it was already 30degrees. but there facilities are second to none. but i am most impressed by Duke's facilities and everything they have that is connected to the Washington Duke Inn. Real first class.

I grew up by the Riviera and I am not certain currently but USC only has limited playing amounts there.

My alma mater University of California, San Diego palys at Torrey Pines as often as they like, not to mention it is one of the top ranked public schools in the country, so you will get a great education as well.

University of Texas' course is a beast!! It is amazing though, really beautiful, burnt orange is everywhere. The club house is cool, part of it is under construction but there are little things that make the course/ clubhouse special and very Texas. There are some amazing views of the hill country but the major downside is how secluded it is. Yes there are houses and stores around it but the road you drive to get to the course is kind of scary, it's not super convenient but it's amazing.

As for the best college home course in my own opinion, Mount Holyoke's Orchard Course is ranked high. I haven't played there yet but they hosted a U.S. Women's Open in 2004 and you pretty much walk out your dorm and cross the street to play.
