Cutting the Cord- How do you get TGC?

Recommended Posts

Thinking hard about how to cut the cable cord as we have Spectrum and are now just short of $200 per month. The plan is to keep internet and phone and to sign up for a streaming tv service. I have considered Hulu Live, Youtube TV, Sling, and PS Vue. All include The Golf Channel although some charge more for a sports package. I think I’m going with PS Vue Core that includes TGC for $45.

Anyone use PS Vue here for your channel line-up and TGC? Wondering how it works out for you.

A buddy of mine has PS Vue and he likes it, but his complaint is they don't offer any multi-device steaming options, such as phone or tablets. So if you do get PS Vue, just know you will only be able to watch from home, on the Playstation, and you cannot share your account with anyone. I subscribe to YouTube TV myself and they provide the Golf Channel, plus other sports networks such as ESPN, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Big 10 Network etc, plus you can add up to 5 family members, each of whom use their own Google account so they get their own DVR storage.

That's not true. I have Vue and can watch from my computers, iPhone, kindle as well as my kid's PS3 and PS4. There's a PS Vue app in all the stores.

It is, however, like Netflix, where you can only have a certain number of devices streaming at once.

I switched from directv about three months ago.

I must admit that I hated it at first.

The controls were very different from what I was used to and watching tv with a game controller as your remote was weird.

The channel listing is in alphabetical order, not numbered.

It took awhile to get used to the dvr and how the record setup works, but now I'm pretty satisfied.

imo- It's infinitely easier to watch on a computer controlling with a mouse.

I sometimes will open multiple windows on my desk top and watch golf and football at the same time off the dvr.

I think I pay $45 a month and get TGC.

Thanks for clarifying for me! I must've misheard what my friend was saying about PS Vue. I did know there was some restrictions with it though, like you mentioned with Netflix.

Wait so you cut the cord by paying $45 a month for PS Vue? Isn’t that essentially just switching cable providers and not cutting the cord?

Yeah, that’s true. But it means getting off cable if switching to an online streaming service and it would save me about $60 per month. So, $720 per year.

I'm saving even more than that. My bills with Directv were around $160 a month with their hidden fees and equipment/HD charges. With Vue, you pay $45 a month without having a contract. Don't like it? Don't renew next month and try something else. There's a free trial (I think 2 weeks?) too.

I'm hoping that eventually there will be a Vue app for your smart tv and you won't even need the game system. Sony tv's might already have it, but I have a couple of Vizios.

From what I understand you do not need the game system at all. You can get a Roku or Amazon stick, or even get it through Apple TV now. Will try it this week in addition to an antenna and will report back. I pay $195 per month right now for cable, home phone, and internet with Spectrum (formerly Time Warner Cable). I will keep the phone and internet for $90 and dump the cable. If I didn’t need the Golf Channel I might even skip the streaming service all together. But 90% of what I watch is golf and news, so I’m not giving up TGC.

If you read the other thread then you know you could set up kodi on a firestick or laptop to tv and get the golf channel for free.

Is a landline and internet really $90? I'd ditch the phone. That seems pricey to me.

  • 2 weeks later...

A vote for Directvnow here. I was an early subscriber and got the 100 channel package for $35/month. There were growing pains with outages etc, but all that seems to be ironed out. I've had the service over a year and for what I get vs the price I have no reason to look elsewhere. Another point to consider is getting your internet from a smaller local company as the big guys cap and jack up the price when you drop cable. I live in the Bay Area and use Sonic.net for my isp.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
