The better clubs in Cleveland will not be reasonably priced. Also, which side of town are you referring? BB

East side...Sandridge, The Country Club, Chagrin Vally, Canterbury, Barrington, Walden

Not as familiar with with the west side clubs but Lakewood is nice. Akron south will be Firestone, Canton Brookside, Glenmor, Congress Lake, Shady Hollow

I was just wondering about the whole Cleveland area. Just might be moving there and wanted to possibly get a place by a golf course and just don't know the area well at all. Just wanted to see if people had courses they really enjoyed being members at. I know memberships are never cheap, but was wondering if there were some that were a better bang for your buck. Also if there are any courses that have good deals for people under 30?

I believe Mayfield Sandridge has a nice junior membership and you get two tracks. Not to mention Sandridge is a great course. It's a bit east however. It's really going to depend on where you choose to live. Downtown and Tremont is extremely vibrant right now and fun if you are a young family or single. The Westside is overall more youthful and open. The Eastside has better clubs but they are more costly as well. I think you will find Clevelanders warm, friendly and fun to be around! BB

If you have any questions shoot me a PM happy to offer my advice for whatever it's worth. You will be happy to know we have plenty of great old school clubs shouldn't be hard to find a good fit.

All the best courses are on the east side and very expensive/exclusive. The west side only really has Lakewood and Westwood, both of which are expensive family clubs. Red Tail is a housing development course in Avon, that might be affordable to get in. They were semi private 10 or so years ago, but I'm not sure what the current status is. Avon Oaks is not a great course, but it is certainly one that would be affordable if you are in the western suburbs. I'm not sure what would be moderately priced on the east side. Acaccia and Oakwood closed a few years ago, so there has been some consolidation. I'm not sure if that means the clubs who survived are doing well or if they might be more affordable than I think.

As a native Clevelander who lived on the publics of the area, there is a lot of solid affordable golf. However, there are surprisingly few ranges in the area, so I see the value in a private course if you're looking to practice.

It really depends on what side of town you're looking to move into. As posted above, clubs like Country, Kirtland, and Canterbury are probably the best in the area but they're all on the east side and carry somewhat onerous initiation/sponsorship requirements for membership - in addition to the cost - that may prove difficult for an outsider (unless you have a corporate connection at work).

That being said, there are plenty of great clubs in the area, both on the east and west sides. If you can narrow down a bit based on what community you're looking to reside in (assuming you'll be working downtown?) that would help immensely.

EDIT: Lakewood and Westwood are very nice however a bit further west (Lorain County) are Elyria CC and Oberlin GC, which are fantastic and both offering deals right now. They lack convenient access to I-90, however (reasonably close to 480 though) which is a bummer.

Great point on Elyria and Oberlin. Both are good courses that you can get in to at a reasonable price. But it's probably only reasonable to play there if you live in Avon or further west. Also makes it impossible to have an after work 9 if you work downtown.
