Measuring blade length

When an iron is said to have a particular blade length, what is being measured? My main set of irons is an old set of TM 300 forged that I bought as Miura (I think). They have been fantastic. But my other set is a set of MP33's. I don't play them much anymore. This season I'm going to find either another set of cavity back irons with modern lofts or rechrome the 300's. I love the size and shape of the 300's but I'd love to know how blade length is measured in case it might come in handy during my iron search this season.

No offense intended, but most people don’t physically measure this and choose clubs based on it.

 

They set the candidate club up in playing position and see if it suits their eye. It’s all about what your eye likes. If a club is a couple millimeters bigger or smaller than what you have, it should be irrelevant if you find it pleasing to look at.

Blade length is the face length, measured from heel to toe.

 

I like the compact blade design for it's easier to shape shots.

Medium face profile should be workable and also not too clumsy. Which is your TM 300 forged falls in

 

For game improvement and the super game improvement irons, the more like a shovel the better suited for the user.

You are most likely correct in that the differences are miniscule according to the ruler but the 300's seem larger that my 33's and, as you said, are millimeters larger. I just thought that during my search for used irons, I could compare specs that might be online somewhere.

It's measured from where the center line of the hosel intersects the "ground line", to the end of the toe.

 

Visually this can get confusing, because there are head designs that have a longer "blade length", but a relatively shorter "flat area" of the face. A Ping Eye2 with it's "under-slung hosel" is an example of this.

Blade length is a concern that few care about, but I do. I prefer compact or shorter heal to toe measurement and don't like a high toe. Its measured from the heal to bottom of toe, least that's how it was when I had my custom made MacGregor MB's constructed. One of the reasons I chose 716 CB's. I also prefer narrow, low bounce almost flat soles, minimal camber, and sharp leading edges.
