Palm Springs (La Quinta) June 1st & 2nd - PGA West meetup?

Hi WRX'ers,

I will be in La Quinta with my wife May 31 - June 3 and as she will be at a conference a good portion of those days, I have free reign to play some golf. I'm interested in the PGA West courses due to proximity to the conference and came across this deal on underpar.com:

Would anyone else be interested in splitting the cost of this and joining up for a morning round on Friday, June 1? It allows for complimentary replay, although it may be approximately 1000 degrees in the afternoon at that point, but I could be game to go 36 as well.

I was keen to play the Nicklaus Tournament course, but could be convinced to play any of the 5 courses there. For reference, I play off about 10-15; on tighter courses, that gets worse.

Anyone want to meet up?

June 1st is usually the magical date where the rates plummet! I used to go there 1-2 times each summer for their ridiculously cheap summer rates of stay and plays. Love to do it.

Not going to be around but hope you can find some guys. I see your rate doesn't include the hotel. You can get the same deal wtih the La Quinta Resort for a very similar price right after Memorial Day.

Schley, appreciate the tip, I'll check with the resort - we already have lodging sorted out through her conference, else I would have looked for a stay and play.

Still comes out cheaper for me to book a twosome rather than as a single.

I bought the same deal and plan on playing the Stadium course early 5/20 or 5/21 if someone is looking for a round and free replay at any of the PGA West courses.

Quick update here: bought the deal on teeoff.com and now have a Friday June 1, 9:00am spot for $50 at Nicklaus Tournament course at PGA West ($100 if I don't find a playing partner), so pm me if you're interested in joining. Otherwise, I still come out ahead compared to what an individual round is going for on GN or the course website.

I'll start hydrating now.

Do stay hydrated as I think it was the 2nd time I played out there on one of the great stay and plays at LaQuinta Resort and PGA West in July and we played 36 and finished around 3 pm. I remember feeling very light headed and my heart racing. I was drinking tons of water, but sat in the clubhouse for like an hour with my buddies just cooling down. I drank about 3 gallons fo water that day as I filled up the 1/2 gallon coolers 6 times. I NEVER remember even going to the bathroom once! That is what can happen.

Appreciate the tip and story schley - I grew up playing golf in Texas and am quite familiar with that same phenomenon of massive liquid intake with minimal outflow during the scorching summer months. Might look into a cooling towel or band to keep in the cart in addition to constant water consumption.

Just played Nicklaus Tournament (not private one) and Norman a couple of weeks ago. Norman was pretty good; Nicklaus Tournament was pretty bad IMHO, especially front 9; ridiculous green layouts, absolutely no bailout areas to elevated greens that have bunkers everywhere. (I'm a 7 and it was ridiculous to approach those greens). Mountain course or even Stadium course instead of Nicklaus. You could tell, the practice range was very nice at Norman, bad at Nicklaus.

After playing last weekend, I thought it was good tee to green. Wide driving corridors but you had to pick the correct side of the fairway for optimal angles in, but I totally agree on the green complexes. Those are clearly the main defense to scoring given their elevation, bunkering and narrow width/length (depends on the green). Even then, the greens seemed to be in bad condition, some sort of odd grass interspersed in the grain.

I played Nicklaus Tournament twice ($39 same day replay) and then played SilverRock the next morning. Thought SilverRock was in good condition (if not overwatered) But was disappointed by their greens being sandy and burnt out in spots. Overall, liked the course, didn’t love it, not sure if I’d play it again for the price.
