Pebble Beach in August?

I’m planning to take the initial trip out this August. However, after looking at the calendar, I noticed Pebble will be hosting the US Amateur from 13-19 August. Based on this when would you recommend going? In July/September, or would a week or two later in August be acceptable?

I would go later in August or September as the weather is usually really nice. The end of September has the Champions Tour event.

I would go the week after the US Amateur. We played there 2 weeks after the 2010 US Open and it was awesome.

 

Be sure and check their schedule for when they aerify their greens.

I don't think that they would do aeration anytime before a Champions Tour Event and typically they aerate later in the year.

Okay gents, here’s some updates. I called a week ago and scored tee times at Pebble and Spyglass without making reservations at the properties. I was a single, but they let me book a month out. Their policy seems dependent on the agent handling your reservations.

 

Where should I stay since I am not forced to stay at the resort? My wife is coming with me, so she would prefer somewhere close to the shops and maybe a spa on premises with good views of the water. Looks like a lot of good options in Carmel.

 

Right now, I am flying into SFO on 8/1, driving down to play Pacific Grove that evening. Playing Spy on Thursday, 8/2, and Pebble on Friday, 8/3. Then, we’re heading up to Napa on Saturday for a few days before flying back east on the red eye on Tuesday, 8/7. Maybe she’ll let me play at Pasatiempo on the drive back...haha. Appreciate any other recommendations on the second half of the trip as well.

Yep. Lots of great options in Carmel. Mission Ranch is terrific. A bit away from the shops but a cool hotel/restaurant.

 

We've stayed in a few places in downtown Carmel and haven't been disappointed in any of them.

 

Cypress Inn was fun. Old hotel owned by Doris Day. Pet friendly so there are a number of dogs on site. Locals with dogs use the bar as an evening watering hole.

 

If your wife isn't careful shopping in Carmel your day may be the less expensive of the two! Lots of good restaurants in Carmel too.

If you want water views and a spa besides staying at Spanish Bay I really like Monterey Plaza Hotel And Spa which we've stayed at many times. They offer Harbor and Ocean view rooms and a really nice Spa. It's close to Cannery Row and about 10 - 15 minutes to Carmel or Del Monte Center with Macy's and many other stores.

I screwed up as I got the Dukes email yesterday morning and somehow didn't read it.

I could have booked 3 tee times for Pebble with the Dukes Special which I usually do, but it was too late when I got the California special and then NCGA today.

I did a buddies trip a couple years ago to Monterey Pensinsula in mid September and the weather was perfect. We did a a 2 night/round package at Pebble staying at The Inn at Spanish Bay and played Pebble and Spyglass. We stayed an additional 2 nights and used Marriott points to stay in Monterey which was also great as we could walk to all the restaurants on the waterfront and ate calamari until we could not eat any more while watching the fishing boats catch the next nights dinner. We played 2 additional rounds while we were there at Blackhorse and Bayonet which were very good courses and a great value. We would have liked to have played Pasatiempo and/or Half Moon Bay as well but couldn't work it into the schedule.

You may see some really rare and expensive cars in the area as the day after you play Pebble starts the week of the Pebble Beach Concours. There's several car auctions and car shows around the area. I just got back from a few days in the Carmel Highlands and temperatures were in the high 60's - low 70's except Carmel Valley was in the 80's.

Ya that's why all the hotels are eff off expensive ;) The US AM and the the Concours d'elegance. We were down there playing a few years ago when it was on and it is cool.
