Looks like another person (including myself) singing the praises of Cal Club.

A wonderful course and place to play, hope they knew you were arriving and had the flag flying for you.

Wish FairwayFred had advised us on the long pants rule albeit everyone was surprised that anyone would wear shorts in San Francisco.

Glad you enjoyed Cal Club. I've been fortunate to play those courses that you have played, albeit not in one trip, and it was the one that exceeded the expectations the most. It was my favorite of the SF courses and one of my favorites that I have ever played. We didn't have the firm and fast conditions though, but I could only imagine how much fun it would have been to play with the course playing fast.

Yes what a wild par 3! Hit a good rescue on the green but was dreading missing it, there is no good miss!

As a former CalClub member, I'm glad you fellows can see through the "Famousness" of the other courses to recognize how good one of my former home courses really is.

I don't disagree with you, but as you know, Cal Club was a completely different course back in your day. Hard to even compare what's there now versus back in the '80s-90's. Membership vibe/makeup is different also. I know that you liked the old Cal Club a lot, as did I.

It would probably be my choice right now if I lived on that side of the bay.

Yes everyone was very friendly, although our caddy experiences were pretty variable. I had a caddy at 3 of the venues, 2 were decent enough and one was excellent, but some of the other guys in our group had poor caddy experiences. They were all double bagging and at least 2 of the caddies couldn’t care less, offered no help, wandered off down the fairway meaning one of the guys had to borrow a club! That was the only slight negative on what was otherwise a perfect golf trip!

"Caddy experiences" is a topic that has been discussed here and other places many times! A good caddy can make your day more enjoyable, and a bad one is just a drag, especially when you are handing him $$$ at the end. No offense to caddies here, but they are an anachronism - a remnant of days when wealthy people had valets, golf bags were uncomfortable to carry and weighed a ton, and there were no distance aids. They only exist at certain private clubs because of tradition - similar to the lack of air conditioning in the clubhouse at Chicago GC. Young people caddying (e.g. Evans scholar program caddies) and maybe caddies at resort courses that can keep the pace of play moving are a different kettle of fish...i'm talking about "professional" caddies at private clubs. /Threadjack.
