Golf near Boca grande - Port Charlotte etc

I will be spending the thanksgiving week in Boca grande

 

Probably won’t have access to the gasparilla course and want to spend less anyway

 

I have done some research and will add courses that I have found later

 

I wanted to get this thread started in the meantime

I have family down there. My Aunt lives on Heron Creek it's nice 3-9's, Riverwood is a good track too. Bobcat changed ownership couple of years ago so I can't say if it has improved or not. Sarasota was nice too. Had only demo houses on it when I played it maybe 4 years ago

Ended up playing riverwood in Wednesday morning and really enjoyed it

 

Got out early and was able to finish under in 3.5 hours

 

Played the back nine first which was a challenge

 

Greens were in great shape

 

Nice course

 

Tough but nice

Really enjoyed my round at Riverwood GC this past Friday.

Was paired with some members who were solid golfers.

Tough course, with driver accuracy a premium.

Conditions were top notch.

That said, they are overseeding starting today, Monday, December 2.

I played Fort Myers CC with my dad yesterday.

 

It's a municipal course with a rich history and in 2017 they spend $5.8 million in renovations. The clubhouse is beautiful and they have a cool sports bar that is above the 10th tee (a par-3) and it's pretty cool to watch golfers hit shots from.

 

The course was in great shape for a muni. It took us, as a 3-some (2 riding, 1 walking) about 3:55 to play 18.

 

It's an old Donald Ross design originally built in 1917. It's a par-70 that is about 6,700 from the tips. But, it's all of the 6,700 yards I could handle.

 

Steve Smyers (also designed Southern Dunes) did a good job with some of the renovations. The originally layout is pretty much in tact outside of lengthening some holes. It is a bit confusing as holes like #9,. my dad and I both accidentally hit to the #18 green as we thought that was the green we were supposed to hit to.

 

This was a difficult track overall. Holes #3, #4, #7, #8, #9, #10, #12 and #17 were quite difficult. Particularly with the wind the way it was blowing. And my guess is that it is the typical direction the wind blows there so it's difficult day in and day out.

 

The staff was really good. They do take charge on pace of play and making sure people keep their pace.

 

Overall, a fun day.

I was told that Kingsway CC is a nice course as well, and they are putting in $6 million on a renovation (Lake Suzy, FL)
