Help with a round during the Waste Management

Hello All,

 

I'm heading on a bachelor party to the Waste Management Open, and we are looking to get a round in on the Friday. They have left the golf up to me to set up, as I'm somewhat familiar with the area, but for the most part I've always played North Scottsdale area. We are renting a house in north Peoria from what I've been told, appears to be in between the 101 and 303. I was hoping to get some suggestions on where to look. There are 14 people going, most if not all will be golfing. We'd be willing to travel a bit if we can save some on green fees, as some are on a fairly tight budget (I understand its high season during one of the busiest weeks). Just hopping for some suggestions.

I’d say from where you’re staying Verrado is a good option. Actually not too far from where you’re staying and you’ll somewhat dodge the crazy Scottsdale prices. I’m sure they’re it won’t be ‘cheap’, but certainly better. Founders course is excellent, Victory is ok.. Really nice facilities.

The West Valley course most frequently recommended here seem to be Verrado, Wigwam (especially the gold course), and Golf Club at Estrella. A "tight" budget can mean different things to different people, but I'd expect those to be much cheaper options than you'll have at the popular courses in the Easy Valley. I haven't played either Verrado but like all three Wigwam courses and Estrella.

 

If you want to drop down in price from there, I'd look at Coyote Lakes and Palm Valley, and the other two Wigwam courses. Avoid Legend at Arrowhead, and I don't care much for the Sun City courses. If you're retired or active military, consider Falcon Dunes out at Luke AFB (not to be confused with Falcon Golf Club, which used to be pretty terrible but is under new ownership now and may be improved).

There are plenty of "value" options out in the Sun City/Surprise/Luke AFB area where you will be able to get a round for well under $75 or so. They will be courses that most people here would probably scoff at, they will not be memorable courses or in pristine condition, but will offer a good experience if all you want to do is play a round of golf on green grass that you could not do at home this time of year.

 

OP, if you state your desired maximum cost per man per round, we can narrow it down from there. To some people, "on a tight budget" means they want to keep the round under $150, to others that means $75 or even less.

I am going to be in the Phoenix area the week of WM open, leaving Monday after tourney ends. Will be in Phoenix until Thursday, and afterwards have some freedom in location. I might catch one day of the tourney and the rest will be golf. Taking a look at Scottsdale hotel prices, kind of outrageous. Any suggestions on where to stay within an hour of PHX/play to avoid crazy crowds? Looking for good courses, prefer open off the tee (not target golf), and rounds $200 or less.

The week of the open its really going to be tough to find inexpensive housing. The Wigwam resort is about 45 +/- minutes from TPC and they have 3 great golf courses. You can also look at Air BNB in the same area as the wigwam or even chandler/gilbert and would save.

Stay in chandler/Gilbert and you’ll have lots of options

We stayed in Peoria last year closer to the Glendale border and The 500 club was only about a 10 minute drive or so.

 

Good course, was about $85 on a Friday and had some decent views. As others have stated, stay away from Legend at Arrowhead - its priced the way it is for a reason.....
