Are there different kinds of grass ranges?

I've been to both driving ranges with and without mats but are there different kind of grass ranges?

Well I guess waht I am asking is are there driving ranges that change there grass weekly as opposed to the ones that let grass grow out and use sand or something like that, I'm not quite sure either I read somewhere that some grass driving ranges use sand with dirt I guess to promote grass growth. I hope that clarifies my question.

the range i go to uses bermuda grass for their tees. then they just cycle the tees back and forth

So all grass ranges just move tees around and fill in divots with dirt sand and seed there aren't any other kinds?

What other kind are you looking for? Do you mean one that rolls out a new strip of sod every week? Do you know how much that would cost? And how unstable new sod is? The only choice ranges have is to reseed and wait until the regrowth.

They usually have about 20 to 30 feet of depth to locate the teeing line boundaries. The line is usually about 5 feet deep, and they move it back 5-feet each week or so letting the area that was just used regrow. This gives the area a while to "heal". Some ranges are really sandy, some nicer ones (usually expensive private courses) are fairway pristine.

The one I go to is just really a big field on the side of where the mats are. You can actually go way over on the left or way over on the right of the stalls. They are pretty liberal there and I've chipped half the bucket and rehit the balls out into the range with mid irons and they don't even look at me funny much less say anything. It's just plain old grass, nothing special, just find a spot that looks decent. They mow it but sometimes it's a little long, which is OK by me. I just find a shorter spot and hit some out of the deeper stuff for "rough practice".

 

I went to one range where the teeing area was very small, I was afraid to hit the metal barriers they put up with my woods. They also had a sign that said "replace divots". That one made me laugh. I take a divot with a 3W off the deck, forget a short iron. My wedge divots go 30yds. out into the range... so I found that one a bit ridiculous.

If I understand your question correctly..

1) The grass on one range will be the same ALL the time, I don't think they would make an effort to change the grass types. In other words, a range will not have Bermuda one year and Kentucky Blue Grass the next, etc.

 

2) I would think that the grass the ranges in a region would all be using the same grass type that is indigenous to that area, so the answer to your question is most likely no to the different grass at different ranges.

Yes, some keep the grass almost as good as fairways. Some are really sandy and it almost feels like you are playing out of a bunker. Some have various lies you can hit off (below feet, above feet, sidehill)...

the range i go to it has the mats in the middle then on each side they have grass tees each side has prob 25 boxes long and they go 10 deep o when one row it killed they move it forward till the whole range is killed then they move to the other side

What would be nice is if there was a range that had these practice scenarios available and actually intended it that way. Does that exist? I'd love to be able to hit a few from the fairway, a few from the rough, and a few from goofy stances and lies.

Yea do any driving ranges give you different places to practice different shots. Thanks for the information so far.

I've seen some that have the funny stances that you can hit off of, and one even has a 100 yard radius pitching green (private CC) which is way cool. The pitching green has a bunker, rough, and all kinds of lies.
