Why is this stiff shaft right for me? (75mph 7iron speed)

I have been hitting a lot of irons with different shafts in the last few weeks. My 7 iron ss is 73 to 77 mph with a smooth tempo. The Mizuno shaft optimizer suggests light weight graphite shafts in either regular or senior flex. So why is it I am getting the best results with the new Apex 19 Pros with a TT Elevate Tour shaft in stiff? I'm sure that part of it is the weaker lofts in the Apex Pros (vs. the strong lofted irons out there) are giving me a higher launch and more spin. And the Elevate stiff might be a little more flexible than most stiff shafts, but still it is surprising. I guess you never know what will work until you try it.

The mizzy optimizer makes suggestions based on generalizations on what tends to be a good fit for individuals with certain swing characteristics. Not everyone will fit into those generalizations. It's not a bad starting place for the fitting process but it can't account for all the various subjective influences and aspects of picking a shaft. So it really shouldn't be all that surprising.

The Tour Elevates are great shafts. Very pleased with them. I’m around the same speed as you, maybe a little quicker as I would not discribe my swing as smooth. Always got fit in to the PX 5.5 (also what Mizuno optimizer recommended along with nippon 105s and C-taper lite 110). When I got the Apex 19 combo set I decided to go with the Tour Elevate in stiff for a change. They were fine, but wasn’t “in love”.

 

Got a wild hair and exchanged them for the same Apex 19 combo, ecxcept I went with the Tour Elevate R300. My gosh they are a little piece of heaven. This is the first time I’ve ever had an iron shaft that I felt I was 100% in control of.

 

The Mizuno optimizer is pretty accurate but, don’t use it as the end all, be all. Consider it a starting point.

 

Just some of my thoughts since we seem to have some similarities.

I hit the demo 7 iron on the course today. If I buy a set, I'll go with the regular. I think the stiff would be a little too much work toward the end of the round. Boy, they are great feeling shafts.
