Ireland Vehicle Rental

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of planning a trip next summer to Ireland (primarily Dublin & Northern Ireland area) for four guys. I've planned several trips to Scotland and always rented Mercedes Vito vans through Arnold Clark. While they were bigger then what we needed, it always worked well. Any suggestions for vehicles that will accommodate four large suitcases and four golf bags? I'm concerned those 7 seater MPV vehicles are too small....are they?!? Thank you in advance!!

was told this summer by my rental agent over there that a van was the only thing for 4 ... you'll probably need to do some good old research and find out cubic storage since (as you know) their cars are a good bit smaller than ours ... quick research shows some 7 seaters that appear might suffice with the rear seats folded ...

Not sure if this helps, but we had a full size Range Rover Discovery last year for 4 people and two golf bags - everything fit, but nothing else would have fit, lol.

As you say, a van is a dead cert, but it can get tricky if you do want something a bit smaller and can pick the class of vehicle, but have to work about the 'or similar'.

For instance, if you knew you'd get a Ford Galaxy an MPV would work a charm, but if you got a Vauxhall Zafira it'd likely be too small. Watch some What Car youtube reviews to get a better sense.

 

Also if you typically use your CC to cover insurance, note that pretty much no CC covers Ireland, to the point they do explicitly call it out in their T&Cs.

I buy an annual rental car insurance policy every year to cover 12 months. Costs about £50 but saves me a boat loan in money and gives me total piece of mind especially when hiring from the smaller companies.

7 seater family 'vans' aren't big enough for us when 4 people with 4 travel bags and luggage. We either hire a large SUV when in America (Yukon etc..) or something like Mercedes Vito.

I’ll say this, on the amazingly narrow roads between Shannon and the Cliffs of Moher (that I’m sure are common throughout the country), I was glad I didn’t have anything bigger than the midsize Toyota crossover they put me in! Omg most cart paths are wider than those lanes, and there’s rock walls on each side! ?
