Looking for a "must play" course on our way to Niagra Falls in Sept.

We will be driving to Niagra Falls the 2nd week of Sept from SC and would like to find a "Must Play" type of course while on our trip up. Will be leaving Wednesday 9/11 and looking to play on the 12th. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Pinehurst may not be too far out of your way, same with Greenbriar.

A day's drive from SC puts you in the general area of Washington DC, or someplace west of it. I'm thinking maybe Bedford Springs, a renovated golf course with design elements from Ross and Tillinghast, and newly renovated hotel. The Greenbrier and the Homestead are both a short drive off I-81, if you're coming that way.

I guess it depends how you travel north through PA. If you're going through the Pittsburgh area on I-79 then Nemacolin Woodlands near Uniontown, PA or Lodestone in far Western MD (Wisp ski resort) are not far off the route. Rocky Gap is a decent Nicklaus course near Cumberland, MD too.

Who is "we"? If the we is you and some adult age buddies that's a big difference compared to you and a spouse and kids. And where do you live in South Carolina? I drove a straight shot from NYC to Florence, SC by myself in like 11 hours. If you're able to do that, then Bethpage becomes an option. Mattaponi Springs is a really good course just off I-95 a bit north of Richmond. Royal New Kent is on I-64 about 40 minutes East of Richmond. Royal New Kent is stellar after being taken over by new owners last year. I've done some interviews with the staff out there, it's great, I highly recommend it. Frederick, Maryland has some fantastic courses, maybe not "must play" but they're good. There's also Bulle Rock a bit north of Baltimore. But I'd go to New Kent...dead serious, I'd say it's the best public golf course in the Eastern US between Pinehurst and Bethpage.

Can you share your intended route to Niagara Falls from SC? Also, on the 12th, around where will you be? It will be easier to provide suggestions that aren't too far away from your main route.

If going the Pittsburg way there’s also olde stonewall. If wanting to stop before that in md whiskey creek, musket Ridge, Worthington manor

There are a few different ways to go from SC to Niagra. But none of them come anywhere close to Bethpage. Would be 8 hours out of the way. As mentioned, the Greenbrier (WV), Nemacolin (PA), Lodestone(MD), and Bedford Springs (PA), are amazing courses. All of them are basically out in the middle of nowhere and would make a great stop as you don't find yourself nearby too often. The first three listed are all on resort type properties with lots of other activities if there are non-golfers in the crew.

There are 3 excellent courses when you arrive in Niagara Falls . On the US side play Seneca Hickory Stick . On the Canada side Grand Niagara and Legends on Niagara.

If you are coming up 81 and then going west on 90 you'd be near the courses at turning stone which are quite nice

I just played Lodestone this past weekend and it was in fantastic shape. Greens rolled perfect and smooth and the weather is phenomenal this time of year. There were a few wet spots (not many) but they got a down pore that morning. Plus the trees were just starting to turn fall colors so you should have awesome views from this mountain top course. Keeps you far away enough away from DC to avoid the traffic too.
