Golf focussed workouts

Has anyone worked with a biomechanics expert on inmproving both flexibilty and strength though working in the gym? What would be your feedback and advice for someone based in London UK?

I almost won my Pro card in bodybuilding and have trained several baseball & football players, along with some guys that had seriously demanding jobs.

Here are some tips for a criteria for picking a training partner or a personal trainer.

They should be very interested in old and current injuries that you need to work around and not aggravate.

Get a thorough Baseline assessment of fitness.

Keep a training log for the first year.

Run away from Big egos. There was an old trainer here in Chicago that ruined a young man's pitching career.

Make sure they are stressing a full range of motion with good form. Otherwise you were only cheating yourself

Most guys in the gym have quite a bit of knowledge and are willing to share it with you.

Good luck in your endeavors.

In general older guys need many more reps rather than more weight.

Find out what the zottman curl is. It is fantastic for forearm and grip strength and a great remedy against tendonitis.

Cant recommend anyone in London, but focus on mobility first, explosion some, and size not at all. Working out can help if done right but it's not a huge difference maker in comparison to practice and technique. The only thing that made an instant difference for me was utilizing a body blade because it helped me control my core independently.

Look for a trainer who is certified by TPI, Titleist Performance Institute. I went through an assessment with a Physical Therapist and Certified Personal Trainer to create a program designed specifically to improve my flexibility, strength, balance and core stability. As an Exercise Physiologist, I can tell you this is the most effective way to have a program designed to improve your golf swing.

This book is golf specific and addresses different exercises/"drills" presented in the context of different parts of the golf swing. Stretching, fitness ball, some pulley-type ideas - could substitute bands for this and come up with some more variety that would be easier to implement at home.

 

If you are looking for more of a gym-based, lifting weights kind of regimen, this really wouldn't be for you. If you are looking for a general plan that will help with flexibility and increasing some strength specific to the golf swing, it's pretty good.

 

OP sounds more gym based, so this post is more for folks looking in on this based on the thread title who may not want to go the gym route.

I started working with Michael Dennington this year. He regularly contributes to GolfWRX (link to a Podcast with him below). He has been great. I get the customized workout and he builds golf specific workouts based on my available equipment and goals. He really knows his stuff and explains each workout to you. He will ask a bunch of different questions like swing goals, injuries, etc. and even ask to see your swing to see if you have any visible limitations causing faults. I am definitely in better shape after just a month with him.

 

We do a variety of things from workouts that focus on stamina, range of motion, strength, etc. He mixes it up a lot.
