Mac O'Grady is playing in 2nd Stage PGA Tour Qualifier in Houston at the Woodlands TPC this week November 14-17.

Along with a number of recognizable Tour veterans, Mac is trying to qualify for the tour at 56 years old. If you haven't seen his big swing in person, it's worth the trip imhfo.

He's teeing off #1 at 8:00AM tomorrow (Thursday.)

I'll be there early unless the market does something stupid overnight--- then I'd get there for his back nine.

...O'Grady last played regularly on the tour in 1989 and has played only a handful of PGA events the past eight years. The 56-year-old has overcome three back surgeries.

"I'm just out here for a little vacation," said O'Grady, who teaches the game in Palm Springs, Calif. "They let me out of the insane asylum for the week. I look at the kids now, and I see myself 30 years ago. I love it."

O'Grady, who lived briefly in west Houston in 1974, still has a love of golf but not the modern technology.

"I love the game. I still want to learn," said O'Grady. "I enjoy playing."

"What I don't like is the technology. It's ruined the game for the tour player. The balls go too far. The balls go too straight. The kids on tour drive 340, 350 yards. It's not golf. It's some form of technology..."

The guy is a piece of work. My buddy talks to him all the time, and the guy definitely has his own opinions on things.

So...what equipment is he playing with if he hates the new technology so much? I'm curious.

Saw him four days ago on the driving range in Palm Springs teaching a few people, it was mezmerizing. I think what he has to say about the golf swing has incredible merit, and it showed when he demonstrated to his pupils what he wanted them to do, and proceeded to hit half a dozen shots into a pin approx 175 yds away with six completely different shots. High fade, low draw, etc, all with the right trajectory and spin. It was amazing he just covered the flag. I have a bit of a bias because I have a similar swing through my own teacher in so cal, so that is something I would like to emulate eventually. But I always laugh at people who say he doesnt understand the golf swing, it's probably because they are afraid of seeing something different to their opinions Sorry for the long-winded resonse, but I just thought it was cool to see a great instructor like him in action.

He doesn't like technology, but I bet he is not using persimmon with a wound balata ball this week!

Mac's rants on technology in golf parallel other's rants about the generally acknowledged "hot ball" in baseball(1980's?) or steroid use today. It's about historical comparisons and also about the effective re-balancing of the importance of different skill sets in golf.

 

He plays blades, old lob wedge, and mostly modern woods. He not nearly as concerned/picky about equipment as many current pros are, outside of his lob. Mac's not opposed to using the newer drivers for competition---after all, he's competing against guys 30 years younger than him. :shout:

Yes, it's amazing to watch him hit the 5 flights through 9 trajectory windows.
