swing path and lie angle issues

address both at the same time, or only the swing first?
i swing slightly out to in, improved through practice, but it is still consistently 2* out to in, according to all simulators i've been on. i pull all my iron shots (at least from 5iron to wedge). straight ball flight, but left of target, about 5-7 yards for my typical 6iron shot of 160 yards. that's the swing flaw.
on the other hand, i also notice that the soles of my irons show a lot more wear towards the heel. so there could be an issue with lie angle as well. the irons were custom fit the way it used to be done years ago. 10 minutes, static measurement and 5 shots with impact tape on lie board. result was 63* lie for 6iron, 37,5" length. i am 5'11 3/4" tall, wrist to floor is 36 1/4", so according to all static fitting charts, lie and length should be about right (staticly).
i plan to buy new irons next year and get fit again. should i maybe not take the numbers they come up with and go with slightly flatter lies, or just accept the results and only work on the swing?
i remember a post by a teaching pro in this forum who thought that most people are fitted too upright, which promotes a steep swing and leads to an in to out swing path. is there some truth to that?

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Is there any plan to take additional swing lessons or modification by yourself?
If you do, don't spend the money now.
When I first started playing, I was an inside to outside flat paln swinger all day long. Hit it pretty good, but always left to right, same issue as you have now. I had my irons adjusted to 2* flat to compensate for the swing.
Throughout the years I had swing changed to drawing the ball to mostly straight to now back to mostly straight with a slight fade.
My advise is, fix the user before you fix the equipment, you'll save a lot of time and money, plus needless frustration.

let's put it like this: i was on the range three times for 2 1/2 hrs each time last week, when the temperature was 6*C (42* F) with a northwesterly wind of 18 mph. i was working on coming from the inside, lagging, delofting and compressing. i'll also take lessons indoors with a simulator and video analysis in january. i never practiced that much in the past. but starting next year, i want to do everything really right, which should also include equipment. i just found out that one of the teaching pros of my home club is also a certified clubmaker and fitter. so it won't be too complicated to have clubs adjusted, if i need to. right now, i'll just keep on practicing, then get a thorough fitting in the spring, and then still wait for two months or so, before i'll finally decide what to get.
but your history still raises the same question: do you think that your swing developped the way it did, because the clubs were fitted to the swing you had at the time?

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

To answer your question, to adjust the lie to suit your current swing is a temporary solution, nevertheless, it'll help your game immediately.
I had done that several time in my 20+ years of golf.
There is an article in the GM either in this or last month issue, it talked about alignment.
You are coming OTT slightly even after taking lessons, it makes sense because visually at address you'll feel the target line is way over to the right ( a natural illusion for the righty ), so you'll try to compensate and hit left, result is OTT.
There are practice drill for this in the magazine.

thank you.
what i am really afraid of is getting fitted to a flawed swing and starting a vicious circle: steep swing > upright lie > even steeper swing.
but being the information junkie i am, i won't decide quickly anyway. i'm trying to get as much advice as possible.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Unless you plan on overhauling your PLANE ANGLE (which I probably wouldn't recommend), adjustments to your swing (especially swingpath related) will not have near as much of an effect as you might think.

When was the last time your clubs were measured for lie angle?

I certainly wouldn't put any trust in clubs that were fit with a random lie angle hypothesis.

If you were fit into 5* upright clubs, we might be having a different discussion-- fit the clubs or fix the swing?

good point. i never had them checked, just had the fitting and bought them. i played them a lot for three years, than only about 15 times for the last five years, until i started getting really serious again this september.
that's why i love this forum. somebody always comes up with some idea that completely escaped me in the first place.

:) i think i would go straight into therapy and forget about taking lessons, if that happened.....

It took me years to understand why I "thought " I was doing everthing correctly and still had problem OTT. My instructor told me not to worry about it if I could get the golf ball to the intended target.
Your alignment is a major casue of your problem, next time check the divot after you had everthing lined up. If the divot is still pointing to the left, your alignment is at fault; you're not aligned to where you think you did.
