Putting in Tourneys

Can anyone best 7 3putts in a tourney round? Racked up 39 putts and a 86 (+15), good stuff. My putting on short putts was poor at the start - i should have made a couple of short putts I didn't, then as soon as I hit a green and wasn't close to the hole I would three putt lol. Great stuff - I probs would have had a really good score if i could have putted half-decent! Anyone else putted worse in a tourney?

not really, seems in tournaments my ballstriking is the first to go, seeing as thats my weakest part anyways. the one thing that can kinda get me though is playing on courses ive never played before, that can cause alot more putts mainly because im not sure which part of the green to hit it to and the speed

Yeah, i've played this course once or twice before - and i found the greens to be a bit strange this time - a little two paced. They were quite quick on short putts but quite slow on the longer putts, don't know ey - sometimes its the other way at my course lol. Anyways, I've been working on my swing a lot lately, and was very happy that it held up - I was hitting bigger draws (well, I like hitting my irons straight) with my irons then I'm used to, so I missed a few greens that I wouldn't normally have because of that, but my driving was all but spot on apart from 1 or 2 bad ones and my short game wasn't bad seeing as I wasn't used to the amount of spin I was getting out the greens. That was good, putting was bad lol

I had a number of high 30's putting rounds in tournaments earlier this year. Once it gets in your head, you are in big trouble. Plus, we were playing a different course every time. Took a putting lesson and found that my hands needed to be further forward before and during the stroke - I had been basically scooping the ball without realizing how far back my hands were. Also picked up some mental tips. A lot of putting really is mental, but don't overlook the possibility of a mechanical flaw. This change with my hand position has reduced my putts per round by an avg of 5.

Lets just say over the years I have bested 7 three putts in a round of golf on many occassions.

You may have heard me mention missing 19 times inside 18 inches in a 54 hole club championship.

The key to better tournament putting is to putt like your playing in a tournament every round.

Putt everything out, go through your routine with every putt.

You have to practice like you play. I would reccomend the same thing for your ball striking.

Something tells me that the speed difference you saw was probably more mental than it was reality. I've seen it before, a guy grenades a couple of short ones a mile past the hole and then leaves the next long putt he sees a mile short due to his mental/physical compensation for the previous mistake. Either that or you were playing greens with significant grain and you were getting downgrain short putts and into the grain long putts and just not seeing/adjusting to it.

Don't worry about it either way. It's past now. It seems as though judging from your signature you have decent handicap and scoring average. Chances are you didn't acquire that from being a lousy putter and it doesn't sound like its some sort of mechanical flaw. Call it a lesson learned.

I played with a buddy in a tourney this past year and he had 4 or 5 3 jacks, and 2 4-putts. He hit the ball fairly well too. One of those 4 putts was a 5 foot save, too!

Just checking in on this thread I grin a bit.

Thursday I played in a little tournament

five three putts five two putts eight one putts I hit 13 greens and shot 76 with five birdies

Three of my three putts resulted in Doubles

I wont guess how fast but they rolled bent grass greens they were slick outside of twenty feet i just had fits all day I could not get the speed right.

My stroke was actually pretty good most of the day late in the round I did hit a three footer and a five footer pretty poorly

my birdies were 3ft 3 ft six inches 4 feet and about 18 feet

I did putt slightly better on the second day. Still had a carryover from the day before for the first nine holes or so, where I think I had 2 or 3 three jabs, but the next nine i putted better and had +2 or +3 or something. I still don't think I made a putt outside of 5ft all day though, like I had a birdie putt on the 16th hole from about 15' or so and I knew it was straight so I rammed it a little harder - ball hit centre back of the cup and hit the metal part of the cup and bounced out - that just about summed up the story of my putting for the Queensland Schoolboys Championship lol
