Right hip problems - video included - looks like it does something funning just after impact? Any idea?

Recommended Posts

I've got a lot of problems with my right hip and right glutes - had loads of physio, massage, strengthening, needling, chiropractors etc.

I can get it feeling just fine when walking around day to day but my golf swing really seems to make it considerably worse. I'd originally thought i had a weakness or a problem with my hip but the more i'm looking at it i think it could be a bad movement pattern in my swing perhaps as whenever my physio tells me to lay off golf for a while and i can basically get it back to feeling 100% within a month and can run, jump, lift and twist without any pain. As soon as i'm back to golf it starts cropping up again.

I was looking at my swing on video a couple of nights ago and my right hip seems to "jolt" just after impact and i was wondering from a purely golf swing point of view if anyone can see a reason for this?

Restricted hip turn with right knee moving toward the target line from p3-p4 and late wrist set.  Right knee should work away from target line entire backswing.

I said from p3 to 4.  Your line is at address.  From 3 to 4 it moves toward the target line.

Knee is just part of issue.  To me, He is turning more into his hip not turning his hip up and back.   His knee starting to regain flex from p3 to p4 means he isn’t competing his turn but rather stopping the hip turn at p3.  He doesn’t have to get it more extension he needs to more freely turn it back through p4.  Butt cheek toward target.  Would give him more time to get his arms back down in front too.

Agree, knee Is just a measure the right hip is not moving.

What has the chiropractor communicated to you?

Any x-rays?

x-rays normal & the chiropractor doesn’t think there is anything of concern either - could be problems with tendons or ligaments etc but I’m pretty sure it’s predominantly a muscular issue (at the moment anyway).

You are going at this a**- backwards.

You have had extensive medical treatment for this problem and luckily you have improved enough to allow you  to walk, but it bothers you when you hit balls. This type of reaction is pretty typical ; in my case I tore my MCL skiing 15 years ago  . I was able to get back to relatively pain free walking after TP for 10 sessions but as soon as I tried to ski it hurt again. I basically  had no choice but to jettison the rest of the season.

Once you get pain free again You need to get checked out by a golf oriented trainer , who will test you for mobility and strength in the hip area. It is a pretty good bet that you have some deficits in that area. ( Even Jack Nicklaus had less than optimum internal hip rotation). Then only AFTER you have corrected any deficits , start to hit balls again ,BUT ONLY hit off GRASS never MATS with their their macadam or concrete base

There is Plenty that the x-ray can’t show plus depending on who is looking at the x-ray (radiologist or specialist) things can be missed. If it was me I would be getting other scans done to know for sure*. Worst case scenario is you spend some cash for peace of mind, best case is you prevent something drastic like a hip replacement by taking action now.

*I’m having a hip arthroscopy done next Friday. The physio thought it was nothing serious (gluteus medius strain). I wasn’t satisfied so I went to the GP who ordered an ultrasound  which came back clear. I felt there was something wrong so I insisted on a MRI. Came back as a labral tear with no FAI (impingement). Got a referral to see a specialist who asked for x-rays. He picked up a cam lesion (FAI impingement) and paralabral cysts on the scans (in addition to the labral tear) that the radiologists had missed. He also picked up snapping hip syndrome due to a  shortened illiopsoas tendon that everyone else had missed.

Sorry for the waffle, the moral of the story is that if you can feel that something is not right, don’t let anyone blow you off, especially physios and chiropractors who have an interest in repeat visits.
