Daly Begins Working With Butch

golfdigest

Recommended Posts

John Daly flew overnight from Hawaii to California, then drove to Las Vegas for his first session with Butch Harmon. "If he [does] all the things I ask him to do, he'll win this year," Harmon said.

Most of the work will be between Daly's ears, but Harmon did get Daly to tighten the backswing on his wedge shots and get more extension on his follow-through with the longer clubs. "Ball-striking wise, he's tremendous," Daly said after arriving early for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Daly has no sponsor on his shirt and no exempt status. He also said he has avoided alcohol for a week and didn't visit any casinos during his Vegas stay. "Times are tough," he said. "Only one guy could get me there, and that's Butchie."

I think that's great. Now I hope JD sticks to what Butch told him and keeps working at it. A lot of times you get worse before you get better after golf lessons. It takes some time after a lesson to train your body and mind to do what your lesson instructor told you to do(without thinking about it everytime you pull the club back). Go get 'em Lion!!

I, too, want JD to regain his old form. He is good for the game, but he needs to do the things to be good to himself. I followed JD at the Byron Nelson a couple of years ago and compared to the other players he looked like a busted can of biscuits. We followed him the entire round and he flat wore down on the back nine. It had rained in the DFW area and walking those hills were tough on John. But you know as bad as he played, he still commanded a large gallery. We are drawn to JD and I wish him well.

Daly's a mess!! I'm a fan of his and would like to see him succeed but he's so far away from anything remotely close to being competitive. He has this lingering injury yet he flat out refuses to lose weight(although he is gaining it pretty good!!). All that weight he is putting on his ribs, ligaments, etc. is stressing his body to the max. That's why he can't recover from his injuries. He's as big as a house and if he lost 40 pounds he would probably see his lingering injuries clear up......and his putting would probably clear up as well!! I still route for him when he is in the field but I am more so routing for him to get his life in order, lose some weight, and get himself healthy(both physically as well as mentally).
Not sick of him, he's a likable guy and just needs some direction and discipline. He's not some stuck up expressionless like a lot of guys on Tour. I'm rooting for him to get his life together and succeed in anyway he can.
I respect your opinion, but I've been feeling like you since the mid 90's. He's worn out his welcome and used up all his chances in my book. I'll give my attention to other golfers that are younger, hungrier and have a better work-ethic than this guy.
