Sand Valley / Erin Hills / Kohler in May

I know weather is a crapshoot but was wondering about general course conditions in May. Looking at doing a buddies trip to a couple or all the big Wisconsin courses and would like to do May because of reduced prices. Don’t want to go if the conditions are not worth the price however.

I played The Straits and Erin Hills in late May. Conditions were acceptable, although not ideal. I don't believe a links-style course has to have perfect conditions, so I wasn't looking for wall-to-wall green.

You are correct that the weather will be a total crap shoot.  Kohler will be cold.  Lake Michigan will be radiating 45* temps even if the air temp is 75* 10 miles inland.  Course conditions are likely to be good to very good.  If I were to make the trip in a shoulder season I would go post Labor Day instead of pre-Memorial Day.

One of the advantages of playing in May is the reduced rate. I believe I paid half of the normal summer rate.

We have played the week before Memorial Day 2 years straight and this year it was 93° and 2020 it was 42°. Conditions were great both years, Straits was the iffiest and still great lol

All courses are walking only so even if it is in the 40's you'll feel warmer.  Granted, 40's with heavy wind and wet conditions won't be fun.  I'd second the Sept/Oct suggestion.  Course conditions usually are better later in the year, tree color, and probably better chance at some warmer weather.

4 of us just booked Lawsonia, EH, SV & WS for first week of June 2022. Can't wait to experience it!

Played both SV courses on May 4th earlier this year.   Got lucky with the weather being in the 50s but I still had to buy a heavier jacket in the pro shop.   I thought the conditions were quite good for that early in the year.  Pace of play was a problem so if you are trying to do 36 just try to get out as early as possible.  We had to walk off 18 on Mammoth and go straight to Sand Valley with no break which wasn't ideal.

The conditions are usually very good, the biggest issue I have is the high grass is yet to grow in. I feel like this is a bigger issue at Erin Hills than Whistling Straits.
