Hitting straighter drives with a faster swing?

This is a somewhat pointless thread i guess, but I'm a little confused in how that is possible, to hit the driver straighter with a faster clubhead speed?

I hit my irons well, but like many others struggle to control the driver, no matter what set up I use.

I hear people talking about mph clubhead speed, so looked up a video on how to best achieve that. I figured I'm spraying it everywhere anyway, so who cares may aswell crank it.

Im hitting higher long drives, and straighter.

I would have thought swinging faster would make it less likely to control the ball. But nope. Even developed a draw most of the time. Bizarre.

I think there is something to this… if you are swinging hard, you can’t steer the ball, and your body finds a more efficient path… it’s hard to come way over the top and swing fast, for instance.

It feels that way too. I've had to widen my stance a little and keep my head still. Perhaps its a bit to do with a fast swing has to be free of tension too. Otherwise it would be very hard to swing fast. A swing that is fluent in a way. It all seems to come together when I just try and swing faster, not harder.

Id never tried it before, because you hear people saying we try and overhit the driver.

This.  Though I'd replace "hard" with "fast".  The goal should be a smooth, fast release of the clubhead.  The ball just gets in the way.

Mere mortals (I include myself in this group) have a hard time getting around the "see the ball hit the ball" mentality.  That leads to trying to control the clubface at impact, which ironically slows down the clubhead and results in inconsistent contact.

On my better driving days, I feel confident at setup, and go on faith that the ball will get in the way of a good swing.  And that result is better contact, straighter ball flight and longer distance.

On other days I just duck-hook one into the woods.  LMAO

The last two lines.. LOL if we aren't the same person.

For reference, I'm 6'6 and touch 120-125 club speed without much effort (former baseball player).

Some days I'm sending piss rockets straight as arrows, the next its power slices and duck hooks LMAO.

All in all, good times.

My theory on this (As I've experienced the same thing).

In order to swing faster, you need to swing better.   You can always try to swing HARDER with a flawed swing, but harder doesn't always mean faster.

I made a few tweaks over the last year to my general swing, and with my driver I've focused on some takeaway changes which have immediately translated into a) better clubhead speed and b) more consistent driving.

A year and a half ago, I sought to be able to drive 300.  I'd swing harder and harder, learn tips like tilt my shoulders back, lift my front foot, etc.  Sometimes I'd hit 300, often it would be an unpredictable miss.  Either huge duck-hook, or a wide open-faced slice that never had a chance.  I'd guess my club speed was around 113 or so then when swinging hard.

Over the last year, I've reduced my tilt, changed my address slightly, and focused on more depth on my hands at takeaway. Not only does that equate to a better consistent swing, but also more clubhead speed as my body is working more efficiently.  I can effortlessly hit 120, and have touched 130 on occasion.  Do I still get the odd wild miss?  Sure, but I can often tell what I did wrong.  I can feel my body being out of sync, club being super closed, etc, .  Before, I'd swear it hit it purely but my face was wide open.

If you've got a launch monitor that measures clubhead speed, I suspect you'll find the same thing.  Trying harder will probably spray it everywhere, but when you actually start swinging FASTER, your drives will be better.
