Good ranger finder for fog / rain?

Hi all

 

I ran a search and couldn’t find too much specific info on this. 
 

Recently the weather has been very foggy and rainy. My NX7 craps the bed big time in these conditions. I’m looking to upgrade and hopefully stay in the $100-200 range. 
 

What RF are recommended to fog / rain?

Generally laser rangefinders will not work well or at all in fog or rain.  As with many things the performance "depends".  Basically, once the pulse return from the rain or fog gets above the detection threshold, the RF won't function correctly anymore.

 

Dense fog or heavy rain will preclude operation of pretty much any RF.  Some more expensive units with a tighter beam and/or more power can still operate in light fog or moderate rain.  Basically, adverse atmospheric conditions like fog, rain, smoke, or blowing sand are some of the few situations where a GPS device is superior.

In the closet I still have an old Bushnel Yardage Pro Compact 600 which has several modes. They are a standard mode, scan, refl (for flagsticks with reflective devices), rain and zip. Zip mode was for shooting through "brush" to objects >150 yards away as it blocked out reflections from anything inside 150 yards. IIRC, the rain function also worked in fog, at least to a degree.

 

No slope function and no vibration when the flagstick was acquired.

After the experience (referenced here), I went back to a Leupold and am very happy with my Leupold GX-3i3.
