These photos were taken when I arrived at 6:45 AM this morning. It was 23* with a breeze. Here we see another 100 year old Donald Ross designed course and also a 100 year old clubhouse just like one that burned down in Bloomfield Hills, MI. this week . Outside of the fact that it took place in my hometown, the burning down of the Oakland Hills clubhouse greatly saddened me. I feel for the staff that I am sure took pride in working inside such a historic building. I also work in one and never tire of the history that is all around me. I also feel for the couples that had their wedding's scheduled for this spring, summer, and fall abruptly get canceled. They all have money and can easily shift gears, but still.

 

We had 55 players today on the tee sheet.

The wind was howling just like yesterday at 15-30 mph. Sun was out. Long frost delay, and 24 golfers  (the earliest tee times) cancelled. The first group went off in 39* temperatures. It was 46* when I just left. It was good to see and talk with some players. It was mostly the young buck sticks that went out today. This winter warrior would have taken a hard pass on playing either day. I do cold, but not that windy cold crud. I can hear P3P and P48 groaning knowing that would be an average day on the links in Scotland or Ireland and ya just get on with it.   LP is way weak they think. 😄 

I took a day off last week (51*) and managed to take care of 3 members in battle to the end. The help was victorious. 🏌️‍♂️⚡  I shot a 79.  BFCC and  CCA are the two toughest courses I play. Any time I break 80 at either one I experience some golf joy. 

 

 

You had stated you would condense your recaps but I sure hope this isn't your final product of the last round.  Please give us more LP...your legion of fans awaits!

No that was not my recap. LOL that would be a might bit too concise.  I just wanted to mention that I played it last week. It had been three weeks since I gave it a go. I plan on posting my recap of Tryon last tuesday tonight.

The Genesis Inv. is making for awesome pro golf on TV this afternoon.

Of late I have lost confidence in my putting. I have made some birdies most rounds yes, but I have also not made numerous fairly easy putts. I felt I needed a jolt, some sort of change. Monday I took my first mallet from when I switched over from playing a blade for 35 years out of the closet. It was Valentine's day and I called on an old flame. It was too cold to play even down in Landrum, SC. Monday so instead I waited until mid afternoon and hit the practice green at Broadmoor. I rolled 'em for 45 minutes with winter gloves on a quite bundled up. It was 34* with sunshine and a 10 mph wind. It had been 2 years since I had used this putter. I rather quickly found some decent results. The short putts were dropping nicely, and I had good distance control from beyond 30 feet. It was the intermediate length putts that seemed to be weaker efforts as many went 2 feet by. The old Rife did pass the test though and it was decided it would go in the bag for the next day's round to see how she performed for 18 holes.

 

Tuesday I went down to Tryon to play with Mike and the boys. I arrived early as usual to do a proper warm up. I cut back on my time hitting balls and spent more time practice putting. My ball striking was acceptable and I got the green speed dialed in. Mike had arranged my favorite foursome for the afternoon. Karl, Rick, Mike and LP. We  sent our drives into the air at a quarter before noon. The sun was out and there was no wind. When we began it was 47* and it warmed up to 56* during the round. 

 

Fairways and greens with two putts on the opening two holes. Missed the greens on 3,4 and 5 and failed to save any of them. 3 over after 5. Six is a short par four of only 303 yards. I messed it up bad. I hit a 3 wood way right that we found in the sticks. I hacked it out of the junk and back into play with my second. Then hit my short iron heavy next. Chunked my pitch and 3 jacked it. Nice triple. Six over thru Six. No. 7 a par 3 playing 140 with a breeze behind. I decided to step on a 7. I hit well it to the back of the green but the group wondered if it stayed on the collar or trickled down the slope and into the trees. When we got to the green it was on the back apron. When I analyzed the putt Mike waved his hands back and forth from afar. We are down here LP he chuckled. I sent the putt up the bank to the right and then let it drift left as it was losing speed. "Oh you might like that one" Mike shouted. I dropped the 45 footer. BINGO my first birdie. Back to five over. As I often do I ground out pars on the difficult and long 8th and 9th holes. I made the turn with a 41. I played 10 well. I hit a center cut drive just short of the water's edge and a 5 iron in to 15 feet. Made par. I sent my next drive right and it hit a tree and dropped. Had to pitch out and missed the green from there, took a double. Seven over. Missed the green on the next hole a par 3 and did not save it. Eight over. Fairway and  green with two putts for par on the next. The uphill par 5 14th saw me hit a solid driver and three wood. I hit a P wedge from 105 and made the 30 footer for birdie. I knocked it stiff on the par 3 15th  with a 6 iron and rolled in the 10 footer for two birds in a row. Six over. Bogey on 16. A very solid par on difficult #17, and then finished with a bogey on the last. I shot an 80. I let out a deep exhale walking to the cart. I took 3rd.  Many times during the round it felt like I was headed for a score in the upper 80's. It was another roller coaster round for LP. I have had for many rounds in a row a scorecard that features some of the very good and also some of the pretty bad. Birdies and doubles in batches, that's my gig this second half of winter. That was my 9th round of the new year and my current index is now 8.1 

It was a fine afternoon to be outdoors golfing with the buddies. The warm sun felt mighty therapeutic. 

I left the golf course smiling knowing I had found some renewed confidence on the greens.

This morning Stan and I carpooled down to Inman, SC. It was time to tackle Village Greens. The course that features the small and very sloped difficult greens. The golf course that Mike says has the toughest greens in Spartanburg County. VG is is far more hilly than Links O T. If I can break 80 here I consider it a fine round.  

We had a 45 minute warm up session. I spent plenty of time on the practice green as this was only my second round with my old putter. We all noted that the greens were plenty fast and much quicker than Links O T, I'd say by two higher stimp numbers. 

Mike set up a fivesome. Rick 2.0 joined Karl, Stan, Mike, and myself. When Stan and I left the AVL it was very sunny. Once we crossed over into South Carolina there was nothing but thick clouds. Even though the sun never burned through it was rather comfortable on the course. 60* and no wind. At 11:45 am we let 'em rip skyward. 

Fairway and GIR on the par 5 first hole. Two putts uphill from 30 feet. Number 2 is a sharp dogleg short par 4. I cut the corner just right with a 4 hybrid. I hit my 7 iron a tad heavy and left my approach 15 yards short of the green. I hit the pitch I wanted from there but it did not release down the bank. I had a slippery one from 20 feet for my par. Smooth stroked it in. 1 putt par. Even after two. 3 wood off of three tee and then hit an 8 iron to 12 feet. Lipped it out. Par, three in a row. I stubbed a chip on number 4 which resulted in a bogey. +1   Number 5 a par 5 was next. Crushed driver and then pushed my 3 wood some and ended in the front bunker. Hit a decent sand shot and was looking at 25 feet of down hill sloped nastiness. Mike said aloud that the putt I faced was one of the most difficult on the course. I looked it over extra long from 3 angles. I played the break correctly and it had the proper speed and found the bottom of the cup. Wow.  First birdie and back to even. Hit the middle of the green from 145 with an all water carry (2nd photo) on the par 3 next hole and just missed the 20 foot downhill'r for two in a row. Fairway and green with two putts on #7 for par. On 8 I missed the green from 170 out and then made a pretty poor chip. I had a 30 foot side hill cruiser left for par. I navigated that one quite well it also dropped and I saved my 4. No. 9 is a long tough uphill par 3. I hit 3 wood from 190 but pushed it bad. I left my pitch short and on the front collar. I did not make that par saving putt and made bogey on number nine.  I made the turn with a one over 37.

Stan and I stopped for a few cold cans of beer and a sandwiches to go. 

10 is a straight forward wide downhill par 4. I hit a big drive (big for me at 225 😧) and had 145 in. My 7 iron sailed a bit long and I ended up level too high on the tri tiered green. This was going to be a very fast putt. I made the downhill 30 footer for my second birdie of the day. Wahoo , that was a solid putt.  Even thru ten. Par 3 eleventh next. I hit the left side of the green and if you end up there and the pin is on the right (where it was) you have a cliff to putt off of. That is where I ended up, in Deathsville.  I just putted it 2 inches pace just to get it started. I came close to the hole but did not stop, it could not stop, they do not stop taking the train from Deathsville. It went gently by the cup but still rolled down to the collar behind the hole. It was a steep climb back up for my come backer of 12 feet. I slammed it home.  What?  LOL another saved par with a clutch putt. Rick 2.0 says to the group "My goodness LP's putter is hot today."   I chuckled inside and thought ...what me a hot with a putter? 😄   I looked at my flat stick and mumbled, putter from the past, you are shining brightly today.   Still even thru 11.  Twelve is a very long par 4.   #12 got messy for me. I tugged my drive but ended up ok in the left rough. I hit a pushed 5 wood from 180 short in front of the green, 15 yards short.  It was wet where I put it. I chunked it mightily. Then I bladed it past the pin. Double time. Two over thru 12. Thirteen is a steep uphill sharp dog leg right par 5. I hit 3 wood to my preferred spot in the fairway knowing it's a 3 shot hole. I smoke another 3 wood from the fairway up the big hill. I have 115 left. I pull 9 iron and hit a decent shot that found the green but is not near the pin. I have a sloped to the right uphill putt of 30 feet. Guess what? I drained it for my third birdie on the day. I just drilled that putt in with authority and my putting high continued. Back to one over. Fifteen is also a Par 3 over water (3rd photo)

It is the smallest green on the course and there is nothing flat about it. It played 139 uphill. I hit a solid 7 iron that was just a smidge pushy and settled on the right collar pin high. I had a 25 foot downhill bender that was going to be very fast. It had a look in as it went gently by the cup and again stopped on the collar behind the hole. I had 12 feet back up the hill. A center cut drop for par. Again a solid confident putt to save my par. The Rife was roaring.

No. 16 is the only hole on the golf course I really despise. It's a drastically uphill Par 4 of 355 yards. The number two handicap hole. Stan calls it and the 18th Mickey Mouse holes. They are. The first photo was taken from behind the 16th green, the place where the murder took place.  I took the photo after getting my a S * kicked by the hole I really don't like. The tee box is back up the hill in the distance. 345 yard Par 4. Water splits the fairway. I do not bring the water into play and am always the only player to lay up short of it. I hit an ideal 4 hybrid off the tee. The hole then goes up a hill that could be a ski run in Aspen. I can not get it home from there on any day. So I hit my 3 wood and then expect an 85 yard uphill 3rd shot. I hit a good 3 wood. I bladed my wedge so hard over the green and into the leaves and trees. It was another visit to Deathville ending up behind that green. I hit an ok pitch but it rolled off the green and fell off the cliff. I had to walk down the hill 50 yards in front of the green and I was getting very upset for on the hole I dislike so much I was letting a very good round go quickly down the drain. The group was very quiet up on top of the hill as I addressed my 5th shot. I continued to mess up the shots that followed. Looking over my final putt on 16 I said aloud, " I guess I can still laugh at this disaster because after all I am now putting for an eight. I thought of our Mr. Phoenix and laughed !  I needed that at this moment.   I dropped it for a quad, yup a numero ocho.  Five over with two to play. It is a long steep walk up to the 17th tee box. I let the group head on up as I need some cool off time. As the four of them hit their drives I drank some Bud Light and took two hits off a J. I was just shaking my head knowing that once again I had a round that had multiple birdies but also saw messy stuff......a double and a snowman. I let it get away bad on 16 and it was severe gut punch. After they all hit I moseyed up the stairs to the tee box. I smoothed a 3 wood down the middle. I hit my approach shot long right. Made an average pitch and faced 20 footer of banked right to left action for par. I made that putt and Karl shouts.." the man is BACK."  On the last hole a zig zag uphill par 5 with water all around saw your commish methodically plot his way with a 5 wood off the tee to the middle of the fairway, a 6 iron next to a skinny peninsula sort of thingy, and then a hybrid in and a two putt for par from 40 feet. After the as* kicking that I took on 16 I somehow regrouped and made two solid pars coming in and that felt pretty good. I did leak a good bit of oil heading to the finish line, but in the end my 77 was good enough to take the checkered flag.

After pouring rain all day yesterday here in the dirty south, Mother Nature has decided to hold off until tomorrow to dump more rain. That gives me the opportunity to play some birthday golf today. 9:00AM tee time with my father in law and pops. I’m hoping to come away with bragging rights but this movie has already been written. I suspect a pair of 42’s for me and a smooth 76 or better from him. My goal is to break 80 but if I can shoot better than may age on each side I’ll be happy. I turn 43 years young today. Share my birthday with Mr. George Washington. Full recap this evening. ⛳️🏌🏼‍♂️💨
