Lie Angle

Sorry for another question. Hope that is ok.

 

I have been told I need a generic 2 degree upright shaft using tap on the sole of the club. (I am 6’4, No good fitters where I live, 7 iron would be 64 with the adjustment)

 

But I still swing 5 degrees over the top with slightly high hands (according to a pro). So is it actually better to chance going 1 degree instead, hoping it will help force me to improve my swing?

If everything is working as well as it can and you still have a tendency to pull or push then you might want to change the lie to dial it in a little better, but a little is all you're going to get. There's no perfect hand position. Jim Furyk and Bryson DeChambeau couldn't be any further apart with their hand positions, yet they both manage to do pretty well. Fiddle with it of course, to find what works best for you. If you are consistently pushing shots lowering the hands will help. You can increase the effective lie by 4 degrees with a 38 inch club by dropping the hands three inches.

Certainly.  That's the main point of the forum.

That's not a good way to fit for lie angle.  It's very unreliable.

 

This is method is much better.

Nothing's impossible but it's very unlikely that playing it with the lie angles off would help.   Now if you know you're going to be working on swing changes that might actually change what will be a good fit, there's nothing wrong with anticipating some of those changes.  

 

1-2* really isn't that big of a deal for lie angle being off so wont generally cause any problems as long as you understand that the ball flight results will be offline by 2-5 yards from what it might be with correct lie angles. And it should be a consistent miss.

 

Finally it's also not that hard to get the lie's bent back after you make the swing changes or have them bent as the swing progresses.     Especially since path itself doesn't really dictate the need for more upright.  It's really the posture at impact that is the dominant factor (e.g. early extension).  And those changes are much harder to make or take longer to fix.
