TIMBERSTONE GC in the UP (upper peninsula michigan) it's in Iron Mountain, Michigan... probably the most challenging and well-maintained golf course i have ever played... my family has a place in the UP (60 acres in Hermansville-population of 550) and it's absolutely gorgeous country up there... mostly known for fishing (caught a 45 inch northern this past fall) and hunting/skiing and other outdoors, but a couple of the golf courses are immaculate... too bad the golf season goes from like late april until like early august!!! i'll bet good money that out of the 9,000 + members we have on this forum i'm one of the ten that have played/heard of this course!!!!

Porto Cima at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, one of the best course that not many golfers knows about. It has one of the tougher finishing holes that I've played on.

I played there in USGA Mid-Am qualifier for 2 spots to advance which was in heavy rains, the two qualifying scores was two 75's. I shot 77 and was in playoff for an alternate spot that I didn't bother playing for it because those 2 guys was going anyway. But I loved that course better than some of the other famous courses such as Oak Tree GC or Pinehurst #2.

Kingdswood Golf Course in Glens Falls, NY. Great place with plush fairways, fast greens and a good variety of holes that go left and right, with good bunkering. Tore me up the first time I played it, but it's still one of my favorites.

#2 would have to be Sea Trail Rees Jones course. The designer name says it all!

The Club at Carlton Woods (The Woodlands, TX a nicklaus singnature design UNFREAKINBELEIVEABLE i worked there for over a year) top class and top notch, To host USGA State Team next year.

Yeah, this is #1 on my list too. My uncle's a member there - I've only gotten to play there once with him though. I believe it hosted some US Open qualifying rounds recently also. Fazio designed the other course there which opened a couple months ago....apparently its the only club in the world that has both Nicklaus and Fazio designed courses on it.

Bull Valley GC in Woodstock, IL

Bull Valley on Golfdigest.com

Easily one of the top 5 clubs in the entire state of IL

Mike

Bull Valley is certainly a difficult course, but it's not unknown. It has held a number of US Amateur and US Open qualifiers. Honestly, I don't know how most of the membershiop can play the course. It's really a course designed for single digit handicappers.

I've played this a couple times while visiting the UP. Absolutely amazing course, especially for the price. It has been rated as a 5 star by Golf Digest a couple times.

I'm planning a trip there for this June. A good friend has played it and just loved it.

My all time favorite was: www.ocotillogolf.com in Chandler AZ.

Shot a 73 there, my personal best score. (cool)
