67 ViP - Wilson Staff D9 Forged added to the bag

Interesting. How does the gapping work out between the 49* GW and the 56* wedge? Have you adjusted the loft of the 56*?

Really like the look of those wedges, btw.

The 56* in the photo is bent to 54*, but I just swapped in a 52* because the new GW is 49* (basically an AW) and I’ll adjust it to 48*, and leave the 58*. The lofts on the D9 Forged are several degrees stronger than the CB’s I was playing, particularly in the longer clubs. That will leave 3-4* lofts between the 4-GW/52*.

A 49* wedge is bit tricky to gap with. I usually find a 52* as the next wedge down to be too close in distance, whereas a 54* usually creates too big a gap. So, like you, I end up tinkering with lofts.

I hit balls today for the first time with them, must be 20 yards between the GW and 52…which I bent to 53. The + 1/2 inch in length and 75g Recoil Dart shafts add up to bonus distance…just not sure how much until I get on the course tomorrow. Hopefully I can get in 36 holes and dial them in.

I was going to ask you about the length of the wedge shafts, seeing as how you have your irons and GW at +0.5".

I have a similar problem, because I like my clubs a little longer than standard, so I need to get wedges extended to match, but that messes with the swing weight.

I’ve had to get longer than std lengths on my last two sets as I discovered that they are too short for the ridiculous strong lofts that are the industry norm now. Up to the late 90’s a one iron was 17* loft and 40 inches long, two iron 19/20* and 39 1/2 inches long…all the way down to a PW that was about 50* loft and 35 1/2 inches or so. Now they say a four iron is 19* and 38 3/4 inches long and a PW is 43*…and try and tell everyone that irons are longer now. The industry is cheating, and ginning up new wedges for you to buy that require replacement on a more frequent basis; I.e. AW/GW, etc. Trying to explain that to a younger customer that never played before 2000 is a comedy of errors. The ball and graphite shafts are huge factors in distance gains or even maintaining iron distance for an old fart like me. It would be hilarious to watch a younger generation try and play with a balata ball…even the last models such as the Maxfli HT100 were still easily damaged or knocked out of round.

Totally understand. When I'm playing my older iron sets (I have quite a few...), the PW is usually 50 degrees, give or take a degree, so I'm happy with a 35.5" shaft. Problem is, some of the Japanese sets from back then have pitching wedges with 35" shafts, and it's like hitting a lollipop stick.
