1965 Pedersen Ephemera

I recently picked up this cool 1965 Pedersen Golf catalog that shows my Exel stainless irons, helping solve the mystery of my clubs age.

 

What is really cool is the enclosed letter and order forms.  Fun to see this stuff survive nearly 60 years.

I love this kind of thing.  Old catalogs and paperwork is so interesting and informative and just so fun to hold in your hands.  Perhaps unsurprisingly this brochure really makes me want to get a set of Excel clubs. 😀

Pretty cool that you could get the same iron in two different materials.  And just what is a Super Sand wedge?  I want to see that!

I remember back in the day seeing one set of Pederson clubs. My Old Man had taken them in trade and he had explained to me about those and Golf Craft really being top line expensive clubs. I do remember Pederson on those irons I saw had 17-4 stamped on the back of the irons. Never did hit them and I do not know if he sold them or what ever. I know I asked him about that and he said at the time it was some kind of special steel. But at the time we did not know a heck of a lot about steel in clubs

Here is my set which I bought a couple years ago.  This was them when I first got them, they have a lot more wear now.

 

My confusion began as my set was shafted with Precision Rifle shafts and the heads were in new condition.  I thought maybe they were from the end of Pedersen’s days and were perhaps from the 1980’s.

 

I then saw a similar set on eBay that were exactly the same but not chrome plated.  Made me realize mine were probably older and had been chromed when they weren’t originally.  This 1965 catalog now dates them definitively.

talk about gorgeous... weaker lofts I'd suspect, anyway, how forgiving are those blades? How do they feel when you button one with a balata?

Very forgiving blades.  All the weight is low in the head and the sole width is rather wide.  I also ground a little relief into the leading edge.

 

Lofts are very weak, 52* pitching wedge, 4* increments down to a 24* 3-iron.

 

Really nice feel with a balata or a modern urethane ball.
