Club Build Question

I have a set of Titleist MBs with C Taper S+ hard stepped 2X built 1/2" long.  When hard stepping constant weight shafts does the overall club weight go up compared to straight in?  This set of irons feel much heavier than I think they should.  Comparing them to a set of MP 33s built to the same specs using DG S400 the MBs are noticeably heavier.

 

Why am I asking?  I love the MBs, but I'm getting older and the weight becomes an issue after the first 10 holes.  Enough of an issue that I am considering a new set of irons.  Problem is that I can't find a set that I hit as well or better than my current set.  That brings me to thinking I should try pulling the 5 iron shaft, put it in the 7 iron, trim it and see what happens.  My question for experienced builders is, do you think this approach would help reduce the overall weight?

When you say the irons are heavier do you mean swingweight is higher? or total weight of clubhead, shaft, and grip is higher?  or both?

 

The fix will vary on what you are trying to accomplish, but if you are trying to reduce shaft or total weight consider going with the KBS C-Taper Lites.

Yes, shaft weight will go up a little bit.

Weight feel can come from more than just the shaft weight.   Hard stepping those shafts x2 is only about a 3 gm difference in shaft weight - which puts it closer to but still under the shaft weight of the DG s400 straight in.

 

So you might want to measure the swing weights to check and see if that might be why they feel heavier.  Even if they were supposed to be built to the same specs - that doesn't mean they ended up the same.

 

Are the grips - and grip weights the same for both set?

 

Also, for some, stiffness of the shaft can influence the weight feel of a club.  Even if the swing weight and shaft weight are the same, the one with the stiffer shaft can potentially feel heavier during the swing.

As I said, it would but only a little.   I wouldn't expect it to be enough to make the difference between getting tired during the round or not from just the standpoint of the weight.

 

Although, again for some, a stiffer shafts sometimes "encourages" one to swing harder to try to get more loading than they would normally.  So from that standpoint, it might actually help.

 

That's the funny thing about equipment, you never really know what will happen until you try it out.
