miura cb 301 vs srixon zx5 vs callaway apex forged 2019 vs miura tc 201

Forgive me for how much I am asking here.  I am 51 and have been diagnosed with an incurable and un-treatable illness.  I have back issues as well (6 surgeries due to the illness).  While I am here, I don't want to give up my life-long love of golf.  I thought I would try a new set of clubs.  I still have my beloved CB-57s, however it is getting too much to try to constantly keep an A game to play these.  I also have a set of 2019 Apex Forged and wondering about these but have read all the raves about the ZX5s.  I still love the Miura's though and started a focus on the CB-301s.  Curious about the TC-201s.  I am a good ball striker and about a 10 hdcp.

I was wondering what this great site could advise me to help, which will reassure me with my decision.  Thoughts of combos too.

Thanks!

You would benefit greatly moving from the CB57 to the CB301 just in forgiveness alone. This is the thrust you're looking for. They're larger in size and launch higher too. Lastly, they are still Miuras!

My bests to you through these tough times.

I'm 36 years old, I've had 11 surgeries on my neck and back.

Thank God I've been blessed to dodge cancers and tumors. But outside those, I've been through the paces.

If you want somebody to chat with who understands a little of what you are going through please don't hesitate to reach out to me via PM.

All my bests go out to you.

PS .... Don't ever give up chasing the joy golf can bring you. I went through dark times. The one hobby I enjoyed was taken. I let it get to me. And then I said to myself, self, you don't have to PLAY golf to enjoy it. So when I couldn't play, or swing, much less walk, I started reading about the golf swing. I wanted to understand the nuances of every single prized swing guru out there. When I got bored, or needed something different to think about, I would help family, friends, peers, collegues, juniors, elders, etc. with their game. If they wanted swing help, I helped them with their swing. If they wanted helped with course management, I helped them with course management. If they wanted guidance on clubs, I would help them find an appropriate set of clubs. When Winter would roll in, and trust me, winters were long up North in Foxboro, Massachusetts, I would watch older golf Tournaments. Whether it was something of Jack, or Trevino, or Tiger, or Duval, or Adam Scott, or Rory, etc. I would watch. I would watch with the goal of learning something new that these Greats may have done on the golf course that anybody else couldn't do or wouldn't do. Anyway, my PS, turned into a babbling. I'm sorry. Anyhow I can help, don't hesitate to reach out!

I don't think the 201's as a set would really be that much of a forgiveness leap from your 57s. Full set of 301's is the logical upgrade for a bit more forgiveness of a healthy CB that still has a good look/feel, or blend 301s with the 201s at the 6/7i depending on your style. I am a fan of blending for help in the long/middle and don't have matched iron syndrome.

When I see a used set of 301's pop up I go hmm, I could game them as my A set. My gamers are more forgiving clubs, currently am using a 770/790 blended set, and my holiday/funday set are CB-1008s which are a smidge easier then your 57s but the same zip code 🙂

No bad choices if you look at more forgiving primary sets, as long as you keep the 57s or some other Miura in the stable for when you have to scratch the itch.

The 301 is certainly the logical option and offers discernible difference from the 57 whereas I doubt you'll see that much forgiveness between the 201 and the 57. As for blending I don't think the 301 and 201 blend well. The head sizes are quite different,  as is the offset and to my eye the toe shaping doesn't blend. Just my opinion on that though

I’ve got 201’s coming from 921 forged. They are my dream irons and probably out of my league as a teen’s handicap but to be perfectly honest I find them no more difficult to hit than my 921’s. In fact I find them easier as they have a better sole (more bounce and leading edge relief) for my swing (steeper nice thick divots lol).

The mizunos clearly weren’t for me as I think generally they’re lower bounce and no leading edge relief, so they dug like crazy on my swing.

prior I had Nike vapour speeds, which I would say were more forgiving in the sense that a toe strike went far, but otherwise I really don’t think they’re all that different. My 7 irons with all three clubs Carry ~175’ish on my Skytrak.

toe shots on the miuras definitely lose a lot but is 140 vs 155 a huge diff when you’re going for a 170 green? Lol either way it’s a pitch..

For whatever reason, lost about 10-15 yards with the CB-301s. Felt like the sole was dragging and getting caught in the turf.

Sorry to hear about the health issues, and hope you can keep playing as long as you want.

I've hit the 57s, had a combo set of 301/501s, but I didn't like the 301s so they slowly were replaced with all MC501s. The 501 felt better and was just as forgiving in my opinion. The 301 felt hollow and dead to me when you hit it in the center. Distance off center was great with the 301, but my good shots weren't as good. I had no feel with the 301. The perimeter ring did exactly what it looks like it would do... nothing behind where you actually hit the ball. I would say if you want a bigger Miura, maybe try the IC601 or the newer PI-401. The 401 looks like a better design.

FWIW, the 57s were super slow for me. May have been the shaft, played them with the Nippon SPB shafts and normally play PX6.5. I lost maybe 6-7 yards with the 57s.

Honestly Miura just doesn't do technology breakthroughs. Katsuhiro believes the baby blades are the easiest to hit. Honestly the blades are insanely forgiving compared to other blades. I game a set of the limited run Nicklaus blades and get away from all sorts of bad misses with them.

If you want something a bit more forgiving that's still straight silky from Japan, I'd say maybe check out Epon. I thought the AF-505s I hit were fantastic, and they've since been updated. The 706/s looks like good GI setups too.
