Restoring a Scotty 2.0

I want to bring this Scotty 2.0 back to life. I don’t care about resale. Thinking of taking it to the raw carbon and giving it some sort of patina finish, Also going to sand the top line smooth. Anyone have experience with this?

Inspiration is from a bettinardi on eBay I found.

when you say sand the top line smooth, do you mean taking the curve out of it and having it flat like the betti?

Id say your biggest challenge is going to be removing those dents and dings. That light face milling will get removed very quickly with sanding, which isn’t the end of the world you can mill it again but it will mess with the Scotty stamp on the face.

it’s also going to lose a lot of weight trying to remove all the dings and the engraving will get a bit light on depth. Personally? I’d be tig welding material back on and I’d probably end up having to weld up all the Scotty logos on the face and sole (and just engrave it again if I actually cared that much about company branding). You could file out and sand as much as you like or dislike I suppose, it’s all personal choice.

but finish wise, I can’t 100% tell from the photos on the betti but it looks like it’s been oil quenched and then half of it polished backed to raw and allowed to patina. You could let it happen naturally or apply a rusting solution to accelerate that process.

Thanks for the reply! The top line will just get evened out to take some of dents out. I wouldn’t take down any more then a bit of hand sanding. I don’t mind the dings all around it just not a fan of them on the top. What’s the easiest way to get it to the raw material? I believe they have 2 finishes. 1 undercoat of nickel and then the black on top?

The dings on the face are a bit of a concern. When you say weld then re mill are you saying the whole face?

Although that plan might just be to shelve it and buy the bettinardi.

From the edges were it’s worn I can tell it’s not nickel plated and really any type of plating is generally not a great substrate to apply a coating over unless it’s PVD

I have access to a couple sand blasters so that’s what I would normally use to remove a finish. I’d suspect you could find someone near you that would do it cheap, wouldn’t take them long.

Yah I’d completely wipe the face and then mill it again, I have a mill so this is something I can do, but there are places that offer the service (embrace putters comes to mind)
