Going back from SC Phantom X5.5 to SC Newport 2 again, anyone else?

This is why I’ve yet to get one. I fiddle with it every time I’m in a golf shop, but can’t seem to get my wallet out.

This was me, constantly trying the x5.5 and I bought one eventually. Now it can’t even get in the bag.

Similar boat here but actually couldnt make a short putt. I was missing 3,4,5 footers with the 5.5. I was fit 2 flat. I think going from standard in the store to the custom 2 flat helped my strike but messed with my eyes. Couldnt tell where i was aimed even on close putts. Currently newport style with dot so maybe the line vs dot is throwing me off. I wanted and still want to love this putter but currently gaming a PING PLD Milled Prime Tyne 4 Putter

I have an X 5.5 (my first scotty) and like it a lot but am drawn the Newport for some reason, every time I’m in a shop I putt with it

I’ve always a mallet player so I’ve been hesitant to make the leap

I was custom fit for the X 5.5 I have…would I be able to take those loft and lie adjustments to the new putter or would you get fit again?

I literally went with my blade specs when I got my x5.5 and had no issues with the change. I went back to blades as I holed more with them overall.

I'm still super happy with my transition from Newport to 5.5. I also went with a smaller grip on the 5.5. Im using the Golf Pride Pro Only Red grip. Ive also dropped the weights from 15 to 10 grams recently so I'll see how that goes.

I'm still putting I feel better than I ever have with the 5.5. My old Newport may very well have not been a good fit for me so who knows. Going back to a Newport is never out of the question, but I'm really happy right now. If I entertain going back, I'll need to try the new offerings and get re-fitted.

I haven't had a chance to get out on the course with it, I've been super busy! I did spend about 30-45 min on the putting green with the 10 grams weights and it felt good.

I'm back to my 2020 special select newport 2....I tracked my putts the past 3 months with the phantom 5.5 vs newport 2 and the blade averaged 3-4 less putts a round. My lag putting is just 10x better with the Newport vs 5.5 that I can't deny I shoot better scores. YMMV - I've played a blade for 25 years so I never was a mallet guy to begin with.  At times I liked the 5.5 a lot but I felt it numbed my feel and I found myself with some bad lag putts and even short misses bc of speed.

WIth putting just figure out what works and then try to stick with it....we're all such HOE's it's hard and experimenting is fun lol

WOW, this thread really hits home! I am currently in a limbo mode with 5.5 and Newport 2.5. Originally, I would put with Oddysey EXO 7, but really wanted SC Newport putter. Classic look and feel. I tried blade putter few times just messing around and it felt great. So I ordered Newport 2.5 in 34 inches, 70 degrees lie. I got "fitted" at Golfgalaxy (I know I know I know.. but it was free if I ordered the club from them). Got my Scotty and started to practice at home. Went out, had 45 putts lol. Immediately I went back to my old putter. But then, I would switch back and forth... I did a round with Scotty then with EXO-7. With time, Scotty started to do little better, but not much improvement over EXO.

So, I bought Phantom X 5.5. Immediately, I liked it. All winter I was rolling it at home. For this one, I went with 32.5 inches and 72 lie. I know it's different to what I was "fitted" for, but for some reason, that felt better. It came with 15 gram weights, but it felt really light for me. So I swapped the weights from Newport (35 grams) and installed them on 5.5. I started to get better distance control, but stil, overall my putt count per round wasn't really improving. Hoewever, I continued to play with it, but this time, replaced Metador Jumbo grip with WINN Super Jumbo 1.6 This thing is THICK and I immediately felt better with it. Still, feels better, but I am not exactly rocking my putt counts.

Thinking that I have the Newport, I decided to remove the Metador Jumbo grip and cut the shaft to 32.5 inches. Originally, I was going to use WINN 1.6 grip on it too, but I thought, let's put the Metador back on and see how this feels with shorter shaft.

So here I am, adding more confusion to my head, because from just putting on my BB mat at home, this thing is performing much better than 5.5. I use Perfect Putt gizmo and I am putting a lot more balls in that hole (making them perfect putts) than I am with 5.5

I love the look of Newport. It's such a classic putter, but then I also love 5.5! Realistically, what matters is, which one will give me less strokes. I guess I will just have to game one for a solid year and find out.

I’ve tried probably 5 mallets in my life (never a phantom though) and always end up hating them and going back to a Newport or Newport 2. You’d think I’d learn my lesson but every few years I think I need to try a mallet. Even bought the Mezz last year and could not make a short putt to save my life.

I've bought this 5.5 new now twice. One experiment with a ping PLD prime tyne. Now i'm going all in on a plumbers neck 5.5. I think that might be the issue for me. Hard to compare a newport 2 to the stock 5.5 with different necks imho.

I hope we see a stock plumbers neck mallet.  My reasoning is it makes a huge difference for me on my Odyssey 7.  The ch is just the perfect middle ground between the face balanced and slant neck.  First round out 6 birdies and 68.  Still I find the feel of the Cameron 5 head superior, and would definitely try one out.  Good luck with the custom build.

Agree fully. I needed a matte finish as well on it. Last time i was out with my stock 5.5 i was getting some bad reflection from the top flange. Unless they come out with a jet black plumbers neck 5.5 I think i had to go custom either way.

Sold my Newport 2 for a new Golo 6. Putting has been more of a struggle. Used some rental clubs today on vacation, was a crappy Strata set with a Newport 2 like putter in it. Putted great. Thinking it might be time to swap back.

Well, that was wishful thinking. Went out yesterday and played 9 with Newport 2.5. 20 putts lol. I don't get how I can feel so confident on the practice green and at home, but during rounds, it's like I don't know how to putt with this putter. I think it's time to make up my mind and stick with X 5.5 and just game that full time. This switching back and forth just messes with my head.

I've had a few putter fittings where the fitter told me I was "fit" into the gamer i brought in. If you putt with something long enough you'll learn how to use it. To counter that, if you never settle on a putter you'll never lean how to use it. Pick one and committ to it for awhile.

This.

My current mallet experiment is with a Spider EX, but it’s not lasted long until the custom blade is back in the bag. Been rolling the X5.5 in the shop a few times thinking ‘should I?’

I know the answer but I bet you i still try it one day.

I am genuinely interested in the Odyssey Tri Hot 5k blade. Is the tech in that putter the real deal? But they look awful!

Well I’m toying with throwing mine back in the bag. Struggled today with the course at ludicrous speeds. Had the 2008 Newport two in for several months now but it’s a toss up between the t22 and the x5.5
