Leather sole FJ classics

Can anyone shed some light into how the classic 80s and 90s leather soles footjoy classics fit compared to todays models? I know todays footjoys fit smaller than your traditional sneaker sizes.

I still have ( and wear ) 3 pair of the leather sole classics. I also have ( and wear ) a couple pair of the new FJ Tours. All my shoes are 12m, now the older classics are obviously a little heavier. The newer FJ's do fit a tad tighter but nothing significant to where they are uncomfortable. Just a tad snugger from heel to toe.

I wear size 12 in sneakers, but 11.5 D fits in the old Classics. Remember, those Classics were made in USA, while sneakers are usually made overseas.

I recently bought 3 pairs of FJ, one older leather sole and two recently made Classics (the cap-toe ones). All in 10.5, my normal size. I don't find any significant differences in fit. I do need a shoehorn with the proper socks. I have thinner socks, but then they're a tad loosey. Swiftwick merino running/cycling socks are perfection.

It’s difficult if you haven’t worn classics before and to compare vs more modern shoes.  I’ve worn classics since the mid 80’s and have a very large collection.   Comfort isn’t at the forefront with classics.   The feeling is something different And unique.  There are so many stylish models though.  Also there is the premiere dry line which has a sole that is part leather and part synthetic sole for a fully waterproof shoe.  Some prefer these.  The full leather upper and leather soles shoes are not made for rainy or dew/wet conditions.   The metal spikes can easily be replaced with newer soft spikes.  I do miss the sound of metal on cart paths and the grip they provided.    Sizing I’d say should be pretty comparable length wise.  Width on vintage may be a little narrower.

Comfort and support are the biggest attributes of the Classics; are you sure you are wearing the correct size?

Yep.  I currently have about 140  pairs of classics.     Leather soles and leather upper shoes don’t provide comfort like many of todays more modern “athletic type” golf shoes.   My feet, which now include some bunion challenges, don’t do as well in the classics compared to say Trues which I’ll wear if I’m walking and carrying for 18.

The most comfortable golf shoes I ever had were a pair of Dexter's with full leather soles back in the late '80's. The leather soles moulded to your feet and were supremely comfortable if heavy compared to modern shoes.

You are correct about wet conditions, when wet they were like divers boots! Certainly kept you planted!

I still occasionally search for NOS Dexters but the chances of something turning up in my size are pretty remote.

Tell me you had a really good PUD. That was the only way I could afford my Classics.

PUD?  Is that a pro or players discount?    I have collected and worn classics for a long time.  I have found some good sources over the years.  I sell as well and have had some sales to pga pros most recently keith Mitchell who bought some from me to game in hawaii for the tournament of champions.

Yes, it is a Personal Use Discount.

I have a pair of these Dexters which are very nice and comfy. I swapped out the steel spikes which cut down on the weight.

Those are the very fellows! Identical to mine, lovely shoes.

Mine eventually split on the instep after about 10 years.

I currently go through Footjoys at the rate of a pair every other season and play only a fraction of the golf I did back in my Dexter days!

Trying a pair of Sketchers to see if they fair any better.

I don't have any modern shoes. Some of the Stylo Matchmakers are really good and well made. As soon as Footjoys were made outside America they nose-dived in quality and now have the brand appeal of Woolworths.

One thing I don't miss are the spike marks you'd get late in the day that made putting on fast greens a lottery.

Doesn't seem to bother Tour players, spikes seem to be on the increase from what can be heard on broadcasts.

I reckon if Augusta National isn't concerned I think it is unlikely to be a serious issue..... unless you happen to be in the business of promoting Chinese made golf shoes which fall apart after a season's wear.
