Arm runoff a good thing?

Recommended Posts

My coach Matt Yun has switched his swing philosophy a bit.  Today we actually worked on arm runoff.  Once the shoulders stop turning the arms continue back and stretch and load.  Then in the downswing the sling faster and sequencing is better because you need to pressure the lead foot to sling them.  He also didn't want too much back extension because this would reduce the stretch  he showed a video of tiger and its pretty clear that his backswing arms continue after the shoulders stop rotating.

I always look to youtube to find a video of the teaching concept but most videos speak against this.  What do you all think?

Is arm run off a good thing?  I don't think so if using a classic definition usually reserved for amateurs having an unconnected mess up top, but pros can handle it because they have properly used their torso-shoulders on the back swing,  like Snead and many others did, but they also knew how to get back to the ball whether their fully loaded upper used a shorter or longer arm travel going back.   The longer arm travel by Snead I would not consider a run off- just a longer connected piece.

I swung out from underneath myself, from the lower part of my body.   Byron Nelson

That's not arm runoff in the tiger video. That's sequencing the downswing while the club is still going back. Quite different. Perhaps you misinterpreted your instructor? You get that stretch by transitioning before the club gets all the way to to the top. Not by intentionally swinging the club past the shoulder turn.

Yes on video my lower body started well before the bs ended but I still felt I was pushing the limits of my arms in the bs well after I maxed out on shoulder turn

Arm runoff is bad.  Your swing is short because of incorrect pelvis movement.

Monte I've been working on this since our lesson but I had a question.  I am able to get the tailbone towards the target and trail hip not over but inside the trail foot by straightening my trail knee.  But then its a weird sensation like I'm directly on top of the ball and in order to hit it my sternum has to work backwards in the downswing.  I thought that was wrong but I recently found this video at the 4:20 mark  Ian Poulter is centered and his sternum works backwards in the downswing

I've gone through spells where it feels like the ball is going to go 45° right, and yet because I understand what's happening, it doesn't, and it's flush, and pure.

feel like I have to arch my right wrist and cup the heck out of my left wrist during the backswing (I'm a righty), which feels like I'm screwing the face wide open (related to but different than the above)… and it puts me in a good position with everything else.

I agree with Monte.

And will add that my best students are the ones that almost get a bit excited when things feel different… because they know they're actually doing something different.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
