Cameron Studio Stainless Sound slot or no sound slot

New to the Scotty blade game. Been doing some research. Seems like a Newport (not NP2) Studio Stainless 340 grams is what I have my eye on. I am seeing some with and without sound slots. What is everyone's opinion on the sound slot? How does it feel and sound different than without the slot? I currently game a Phantom X5.5. I appreciate any feedback and recommendations. Thank you

It should feel firmer, make sort of a "ping" sound, and the ball will seem to pop off the face more. It would have a much different sound and feel compared to your current 5.5.

 

The majority of people are going to say they don't like the feel or sound of "beached" putters. It's very, very much a personal preference sort of thing. I would never suggest someone buy one without at least trying it first because it is definitely different.

 

FWIW, the SC model with that slot is called a Newport Beach. They are typically going to be harder to find and more expensive compared to a traditional Newport.

Agree with the above. I personally love sound slots because they look cool. To my ear they are ever so slightly higher pitched and I do feel like there is a small bit of springiness off the face. For science I just recorded myself hitting putts back to back with a Studio Stainless Newport Beach followed by a Studio Stainless Newport. They sound (therefore feel) nearly identical. If you like one you will like the other I think. I love them both for the record.

Yes, but then you are required to go around telling people all about how you have a beached putter and that lowers your "cool-o-meter" score by 35 points 😂.

 

The rules of beached putters are like the rules of crossfit or being a vegan. You must talk about it with every person you come into contact with or you've failed.

Have you tried the different versions of beaching? I believe I’ve only seen the “behind the face” sound slot on production putters and the “in face” for proto or tour-issued putters?

I've tried both but I'm not sure it is as clear cut as off the rack versus tour-issued. The Studio Stainless slot is cut into the face and that was the retail offering. There are others like the Inspired by David Duval that are cut behind the face all the way through. I have a Ping Anser Milled with a sound slot cut behind the face all the way through and it definitely is a little higher pitch when you miss the sweet spot.
