Am I standing up through impact slightly?

Recommended Posts

I have been through lots of lessons etc recently.  I am a 10 index

Very happy with my swing now, but still want to improve my "low point" consistency.  Still getting more thin/fat shots than I would like.

I am no swing expert, but I think I am standing up slightly through impact, if you watch the videos.... I have a good shallowing movement at the transition into down swing, my head moves down, which I believe is good, but just before impact my head and shoulders go slightly back up again - I think due to my hips moving toward the ball (getting closer), so to make space for the golf club which is now closer to the ball, I need to stand up.

Would this be accurate, and how do I rectify this?  Any good drills or feels?

Anything else spotted in the swing to try and rectify?

You are 100% right on your assessment. You are throwing the angle/throwing your hands down in an attempt to create speed/swing like 99% of all amateurs think they need to. Its a really hard habit to break and one I am working on as well.  You have to early extend/move towards the ball to create room for your hands and club so you don't hit it crazy fat.

Learning to fall left, and then rotating into impact with your arms being passive and them being pulled to the ball by the rotation is vey difficult to feel.  I would recommend watching some Milo Lines content on YT.  He teaches a very rotational/athletic golf swing.  I think you are also selling your hip turn short and staying too centered over the ball.  Good luck!

Correct, you are extending. Its a correction from coming  in too steep and having an open clubface. You do a good job of squaring the face, but look how at impact the handle is raised. you want the handle closer to where it was at address. You have decent lateral movement in the downswing. The problems you are having are caused by turning the shoulders to start transition. It's not an OTT swing, but it is steep, forcing that standing up to correct it.

Drill: Work on releasing the club from the inside with your back to the target. Once the club gets down halfway, move the arms through and to the left. This will create a better arc and help you square the face with rotation instead of your hands and wrists. Sequence should be lateral, arms down, then turn through.

What did you mean by selling hip turn short etc… too centred?

This exactly correct, yeah.

Your lower body swings out towards the ball in the downswing which requires you to stand up. You can't maintain spine tilt with your right side coming forward this. This is compounded by the fact you're stood pretty close to the ball already, you could do with a little more space perhaps.

Learning a proper pivot is the solution, but that is quite difficult. Right now your left hip is basically the fulcrum around which your right hip spins towards the ball and a proper pivot is a version of the opposite. In order to maintain depth in transition your right hip must turn in towards the target in response to your left hip moving backwards.

Pic showing the starting points at address of head, hands and hips.  Left (new) much closer to starting point for hips and hands, and head is lower.

It looks great. The iron swing was a slight pull. The driver also was a more pronounced pull. That comes from turning the shoulders too early.  The driver swing was definitely a pull because your feet were lined up for a draw and you flipped your hands at impact. Work on getting those arms down a little faster and then rotating through.

I would simply work on feet alignment at set up and the downswing sequence: lateral shift, arms down, turn through. Nice work on the improvement already.

Thanks @slytown  appreciate it. That’s exactly what I’m looking for, some feedback on what went wrong when I tried the newer swing. It’s always guaranteed something new happens haha. 👍
