Toe Hang vs Face Balance

Recommended Posts

I pretty much spent the entire winter working on my putting stroke. After about 6 months hyper focusing on improving my putting, I find myself sitting here wondering if I should be using a toe hang putter or a face balance putter.

I definitely admit that part of my confusion is that I’ve used no less than 10 different putters in the last 6 months (that’s a requirement to be on this forum right?) and if I stuck with one or two I would probably have a better idea of what works best for me lol.

I’m pretty confident I fall into the “slight arc” category but depending on the brand and head style, I’m finding sometimes one works better than the other for me.

So I guess I’m not entirely sure what the point of this thread even is but I’m just wondering how much of an impact does it have on your stroke and is it case by case sometimes?

Toe hang I'd say more lines up with one's tempo and closure rate than their arc.

I went over the winter and got a fitting and he confirmed I needed some toe hang.  i went through multiple putters this year as well (Spider x #3, spider gt #3, phantom x 5.5, white hot rx v line, bettinardi queen b #6, and o works #1) and after a lot of returns the o works #1 best suits me.  My miss with face balanced was always left and speed was bad.  with the blade i can stay on my line and the speed is a lot better and i think that also is because of the insert.

I also finally went in for a fitting.  I was putting well with my face balanced putter at the time, but that was the last club in the bag that wasn’t fit to me.  SAM data really showed I was fighting myself to go straight back straight through, I was succeeding, but the feel has always been a little off. Ended up with not one new, but three new toe hang blades (lefty problems very limited demo stock, so only option is buy to try) and probably a new addiction, but long story short get fit and see the data, but once you do the feel will be pretty obvious.

Try not overthink toe hang in putting

I think it’s more important for the full swing since most golfers will feel the 45 degree toe down at the top of the swing

I do open the putter face during the putting stroke in an arc like manner and fractionally close during the through stroke and prefer minimum toe hang
I tend to gravitate to putters that have a little bit of toe hang but have putted well with face balance.
I think other factors like putter length /grip / weight of putter head/ putter head design / hosel shape  just as or more important

I learned with face balanced putters and switched to a toe hang putter because I liked the grip better.

When I got fitted the fitter suggested I use a face balanced putter, so I went back to a face balanced putter.

The preferred grips were only $10 so I bought two and swapped grips.

My preferred length is 31 inches which means I have to take off the grip to cut it down.
