Questions for Caddies

Thought it'd be interesting to start a thread that asks caddies questions.

 

I'll go first.

 

1. What kind of bag do you prefer to carry when you are double looping? I have 2 primary bags - a Mackenzie (no stand) and a Titleist Player 4. 

 

2. What's a standard tip amount? What's too cheap? What is generous?

 

3. What do you want to tell your clients if there were no repercussions?

Been a long time since I looped, but man did I love caddying. Here’s my input. 

1. I was an equal-opportunity guy, no huge preference here. Two Ping L8s with stands made for a great day. So did the Jones Sports stand bags. As an aside, the worst bag I ever encountered was an early 70s era leather Burton — that is a beast of a bag to begin with, and this one had no strap. The owner had put a length of the most coarse, rough-a** rope you’d ever seen on there! No way was I dealing with that, so I borrowed a carry bag from the bag room.  😁
2. Been too long so my input isn’t relevant. I will say that a tip equal to my per bag fee (doubling my pay) was on the generous side but not extravagant. I made good money and glad I did it before the IRS got involved. 
3. Shoot, I did it long enough and had enough regular loops there wasn’t much I could not or did not say, diplomatically of course. My players knew I was there to either a.) help them score better, b.) entertain clients so they kept the round moving and closed some business, or c.) just have a better time playing. An experienced caddie is expensive and quite a luxury. I never forgot that, and if I had to, I’d say something to get a player to loosen up and enjoy the day.

Fired, never. I’ve seen a caddie quit mid round, got tired of taking racist abuse, quietly set his bags down and walked in!

 

Not much for the one liners here. 
 

Slow but nice player. I could help speed the group up slightly but I can’t do anything about a jerk.
 

$0, worked too hard for that cash flow to bet. Only thing we did was play for a few bucks when caddies played Monday afternoon.
