Question on Monte's videos

Recommended Posts

Hey all!  So to throw out a most-likely impossible answer (for lack of more info needed)...  I'm looking at Monte's videos, and I would love to know what order would they possibly be best to watch in?  I'm becoming a better ball striker every day, but I want to up my distance (with all clubs).  Currently hit the following yardage averages (based on 50 shots - eliminating the 10 best and the 10 worst).  These were all done on an outdoor range hitting off grass.

CARRY AND ROLL

Driver 10*:  246 avg /  279 longest

3W 16.5*:  228 avg / 247 longest

5W  20*:  213 avg / 229 longest

CARRY ONLY

9W  23*:  188 avg / 209 longest

5i  25*:  167 avg / 191 longest

6i  28*:  162 avg / 178 longest

7i  32*:  151 avg / 166 longest

8i  36*:  135 avg / 149 longest

9i  40*:  127 avg / 137 longest

PW:  45*:  116 avg / 128 longest

AW:  50*:  103 avg / 113 longest

SW:  54*:  86 avg / 99 longest

LW:  60*:  74 avg / 82 longest

Naturally, like many others I'm sure, I'm seeking more distance.  I put the longest in because, in my mind, that's what I'm capable of with a really close to perfect ball strike, which I'm always working on trying to attain.  Naturally, the real number is the average because that's the most likely outcome based on my average shot and swing speed.  I know I need to get more flexible and some strength training couldn't hurt either, so there's always the speed trainers, but I want to get better while also gaining speed.  The fastest driver swing speed I've recorded has been 104 while the average has been around 100.  So I'm wondering with the limited info you have here...  Which order would you begin watching Monte's vids?  Thanks in advance for all who reply.  Hit 'em straight!

First of all, congrats on actually knowing your avg distances and not just assuming you hit 9iron 140 yards because you flushed it once or twice on an elevated hole lol.

I would start with efficient swing as it really gives you a framework to start with. Broom Force is great if you struggle with trying to hit it hard from the top and can't sync up the arms.  NTC is great if you are struggling with wrist action.  They all overlap though. The difference is ES also has setup tips.   NTC concepts are in broomforce and efficient swing, just as efficient swing concepts are in the other 2.  They are basically difference ways of addressing similar things.  For some, if you work on wrists, the sequence will get better, some need to delay the hips to allow the arms to work better, etc.

Watch them all so you have a basis.  Then either go to see Monte in CA, do an online or remote lesson or go to a clinic.  When he gives you something to work on, I feel the videos are great refreshers.  Even now, after years of working with him, I still watch the videos every few months.  Sometimes certain things just make more sense and click better at different times.

Thanks for the reply.  Really, what I'd like to get to is about 10 more yards of consistent distance on my average shots.  I'm going to check out the efficient swing.  I'm sure there's some added distance just in ironing out the kinks of my swing.  Then, if I can get my lazy a** in the gym for some strength and stretching I think I can add some MPH to the swing that was as well.  Everything is a constant work in progress.

This

Efficient Swing is my favorite and is basically a step by step guide to building a solid golf swing. There's at least 3 drills/ feels for every section covered. If your swing is already really solid and you're just after speed, then Broom Force and Power Shift are probably the ticket (I haven't purchased Power Shift yet but have the others).

Making your swing “better” will increase your usable speed more than gym time will.

as mentioned above, the videos overlap, but have slightly different focuses. For instance, NTC talks about the transition, but powershift dives deeper and gives a much better understanding of how to accomplish it.

Don't focus on distance. Just focus on improving your swing. Distance is an effect, not a goal. At a 16 index, you've probably got multiple flaws and compensations that are the reason that you have ballstriking issues. (I say that as a 21--not a criticism. We all at our level have basic things we need to work on.) Fixing those flaws will have the result of making your swing more efficient and unlocking distance that you've already got WITHOUT working in the gym.

Although I agree with @pappaf2 that fixing your swing will be a LOT more effective to unlocking your distance potential than anything you can do in the gym, that's also not a reason to avoid the gym lol. I'm 44 and have recently (Feb) committed to strength and stretching after 2 decades of sedentary desk/office work. I really think it's helping me get to my physical capability, and that definitely doesn't hurt when it comes to golf. But focus on fitness and health, not your golf game, with what you do in the gym. Basic strength and mobility will pay off across life, and if it adds yards, consider that a secondary benefit.

Agreed on that.  The gym is mostly just for strength and flexibility training.  Not to swing "harder".

Better ball striking will improve my average distance as well, but hey, we want a little more yardage when it can be gotten, and if a little weight training and stretching in the gym helps I'm gonna do that.  Besides, I'm 50, and I could lose some pounds regardless.  I won't do it for myself so I'll BS myself and say that it's for game improvement.  Whatever gets me in the gym and doing healthier activities I guess.  Haven't updated the handicap in quite some time.  It's gone down to a 15.3.  I do pretty well at hitting fairways, but leaving myself a 5i in rather than a 7i makes the greens feel much smaller.  GIR is where I hurt the most, followed up by not practicing enough on my scrambling game.  Gotta work on my chipping and putting.  It's a detriment, and I'm fully gonna take ownership in the fact that I just don't practice it enough.

Watch and study them all.  Don't forget about the Early Extension video.  This has been one of the most important concepts for me to really take my swing to the next level.  And probably the concept that took me the longest to conquer.  The Zipper away concept is the key to easy power.

But honestly, there is an AMG video (YouTube) that discusses hip movement that really turned the light bulb on for me.  It complements the Rebellion Golf video really well.

Great topic.

I bought Drive for Dough, NTC, Power Shift and Broom force. Always been curious if I should add Efficient Swing or if that would be just duplicated in what I already own?

It depends on your level of competency on the golf swing. If you already know where the club should be throughout the swing, then it may add little value. I would not say it’s a duplicate to the others.

Efficient Swing breaks down the range of acceptable positions throughout the swing. It basically shows you what not to do.

The others focus on specific parts of the swing and show you exactly how to execute the moves and what to do.
