Outdoor Golf Mats

Looking for some recommendations for an outdoor golf mat. Looking to set up a little practice area on my flagstone patio. Eventually I’ll move the set up inside the garage. Looking to see what you guys might recommend something good quality that isn’t going to cost a fortune.

I was a distributor of driving range and golf course equipment for years. Mats were a large part of my business. What I will tell you is that you need to over spend abit in order to save your wrists and elbows. Knowing what I know from years of selling mats is that I would not hit balls off 80% of the product out there. Good quality mats are not cheap and you’re looking for injury if you skimp. Just my humble opinion. 😉

Do you have a recommendation of a place to order a mat from?

I don’t know where to find it if in the states because my country sold it locally. But if you can find a ygt 3D golf mat (I think Quattro wittek also sells it in the states for more expensive) it’s an absolute tank of a mat. My mat shows wear but only because the nylon fibers loosen up - new they are tight. But they still stay in place and surface is flat - playability wise same as new. Rubber doesn’t warp either

I have this one outside for a couple years now..holding up good. No wrist problems although I dont take huge divots either.

Quattro is a good solid 5x5 mat with a layer of shock protection weave. Lots of distributors sell it online. Fiberbuilt is the most expensive but by far the best to protect against injury. Turf Hound is also a good product that allows real tees. Those are my top 3.

If you are at all steep, country club is the worst. Glad you're a picker. Good mat as long as you don't get steep.

Country Club Elite….pricey but last a long time and take the shock out of your arms and wrists

I recently got the "Gosports 5x5 elite" from Amazon and have been happy so far. I've caught a few fat and dont feel any problematic jarring or anything. I've only hit a few hundred off of it so far, so no real durability opinions yet, but I think it was 200 bucks well spent

Living in NE, I hit off a lot of mats. IMHO, The best mat will have a firm standing zone and a soft or springy hitting zone. An entire mat that is soft foam makes for unsure footing. The ground doesn't feel like that when I'm playing! An entire firm mat will destroy the wrists of anyone. So you really need both in one.

There are probably as many opinions on mats as there are clubs. I bought a cheap mat from Amazon during the pandemic (along with a cheap net) and haven't had any issues. I'm sure I've hit thousands of shots off it. It sits on concrete next to my pool. Earlier this year, I bought a cheap interlocking floor mat to put underneath it, but don't use it very often. I'm more of a picker, maybe because of the mat. 🙂

 

I've considered CCE and Monster Mat, but just can't bring myself to spend the money.

I have battled wrist and trigger finger issues my whole golf career that were developed off of just slamming balls while I was younger off of crummy range mats. So when I was developing my backyard set-up, maximum wrist protection was my number one priority. I went with Fiberbuilt (Fiberbuilt Grass Series Hourglass Pro Studio Golf Mat - Single Hitting (fiberbuiltgolf.com)) and have had zero problems with my wrists or trigger finger. I hit probably 50 or more balls a day of it, and it has been fantastic.

I have had good luck with a C Grade used Rawhide 5' X 5' mat

I have hit hundreds of balls a week off of it for a couple years using the same spot on the mat and see no wear.  I will be dead long before this thing wears out.

 

Everyone is different and I used to have a slight issue with golfers elbow from hitting one bucket off a driving range mat that was like a T shirt stretched over concrete.  This mat does not aggravate that.  I do forearm stretches, do exercises with a Thera Band flex bar (green), wear an elbow band when I hit/play and ice after.  I don't have pain any more, this is for preventative maintenance.

 

It also lets you know when you catch it fat unlike some mats.
