Tee in the butt end of the putter grip

I'm always surprised when someone innocently asks which way the breeze is coming from. If I answer that it's from the north, they then might ask which way is north. 😉

That is unfortunately no surprise to me. Recently I made a short survey study and asked from 20 persons at which time of day sun is in the south. Of those 20 three (3) knew the correct answer, and those people were of varying age.

In the old days lots of useful skills were taught to children but that has not continued.

FWIW, throwing grass in the air is one of the most stupid things to be seen on a golf course. Golfers with brain know what is the wind direction on each hole and do not need to lead themselves astray by doing that stupid thing of throwing grass in the air.

This is the only part of the rule that may be an issue...

a(5) - External Attachments

While this clause prohibits the attachment of anything to the club which could potentially have an effect on its performance (e.g. aiming bars or weights), other items may be permitted to be attached to certain parts of the club provided (a) no performance benefit can be derived

I’m no lawyer or rules expert, but the tee does not provide a performance benefit to the club. The tee provides a performance benefit to you (albeit in a very non-scientific manner). If 100 other people put the tee in the butt of your club, their putting would not improve statistically (in all likelihood). So, I don’t think you’ve altered the performance of the club itself. That coupled with the other language that specifically seems to indicate it’s ok, leads me to believe you shouldn’t worry. May not be scientific enough for the real rules aficionados, but I really don’t think you’re breaching the spirit of the law here

I’m no . . . rules expert,

Rules experts refer to R4.3a where it tell them:

"A player may use equipment to help them play during a round, except that a player must not create a potential advantage by:

Using equipment (other than a club or a ball) that artificially eliminates or reduces the need for a skill or judgment that is essential to the challenge of the game, or

Using equipment (including a club or a ball) in an abnormal way in making a stroke. “Abnormal way” means a way that is fundamentally different than its intended use and is not normally recognized as part of playing the game."

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.
