Cleveland Dunaway

I picked this up as a curiosity, the lack of insert and scoring lines intriguing me.

After my impulse purchase I learned / believe that it is a training aid designed by long drive expert Mike Dunaway.

Now it has arrived I can appreciate its weight! It will take some swinging and certainly provide a work out on the range!

I am hoping others here might be able to give more info or share experience of trying one?

Are you actually supposed to hit balls with it? If so, is the lack of scoring lines intended to encourage a hit on the upswing as without spin and precious little loft that I can see, I would think getting this airborne is a challenge?

Any thoughts and comments welcome.

Why not contact Cleveland & ask them or Mike Dunaway?

It’s a training aid…..not for hitting balls but just used for swinging. These pop up on eBay a few times a year. Many companies made heavy drivers or attachments (like a shaft “donut” weight to be used to warm up. Jerry barber made a heavy driver for this purpose which I own.

i have 10 or so cleveland dunaway persimmons. Many different versions out there. Sweet sticks. Here are a few of mine as well as a photo of a Jerry barber heavy driver (photo isn’t of mine)

I didn't get the chance to research mine before the on line auction closed but I was curious enough to bid.

Waiting for arrival I did some digging and learned about Mike Dunaway and found a few stunning clubs like yours.

I found one reference to mine being a training aid but it seemed unnecessary to make it out of persimmon if you were not going to hit with it - why not just a weighted donut as you mention? I then started to wonder what the benefit of no scoring lines would be - low spin so maybe a long drive tool or, as I falsely concluded, just a means to ensure a hit on the upswing as otherwise it would never get airborne.

As soon as it arrived and I felt the weight I realised it had to be a training aid!

Give me a couple of weeks and I should have a chest like Tarzan and forearms like Popeye! Or be waiting to see my chiropractor!
