Ernie Els' Grip Size?

Does anyone know how big Ernie's grips are? They don't look that much, if any, over standard considering he looks like he has monster hands.

Actually, I'd like to know all his club specs. When he was with Titleist his website gave swing weight, club lengths, shafts, etc. For some reason Callaway doesn't want that info out and I forget it all, so if anybody has a better memory than me, I'd really like to know.

I remember, I think in Golf Digest's WITB a while back, that he used Tour Velvets +6 wraps. Can't remember the rest of the specs though.

I found the WITB article from when he was still with Titleist, but I can't find his grip size on there. Was it a more recent article?

Somewhere in the mists of my memory I remember the same - Tour Velvets with 6 layers.

 

I don't think his clubs are overly-long either, given that he's about 6'3" or so. Certainly, when he went to Titleist he was using 690MBs with a 1/4" lopped off from the previous length.

 

If I remember correctly, he was using 7.2 frequency Rifle shafts too - albeit that again was in the Titleist days..

The +6 wraps sounds about right and his clubs are right around standard length. I was fortunate enough to chat it up with him while walking 9 holes during a charity outing and he stated he has long arms for his height and does not play overlength clubs for this reason.

Are his grips oversized? I know how hard it is to put grips on with just an extra wrap of tape. I can't even imagine +6...

try to imagine the 11 that phil mickelson gets and the 13 that bubba gets and some annoucer guy, grey hair had the same thing, it gets tough for those and take like 20-30 min a grip 6 may be tough but not unrealistic by any means

That's just crazy. I can't even imagine having that much tape. I used to use midsize grips to take my hands out of the swing, and I've got tiny hands. They are nearly the exact same size as Jack's handprints in Golf My Way. And I've hit clubs with the Winn baseball grips, used by members with big hands. But good lord, that's a lot of tape.

I wear and XL glove and can palm a basketball pretty easily, and I use standard .580 grips. Should I be using bigger grips, or just stick with what's comfortable?

What is + 6 wraps equivalent to? > than midsize?

Are the grips he uses midsize with +6 wraps or stand and +6 size?

 

Are all of Phil's gripped with +11 wraps?

 

Is it standard to have all grips sizes constant? or do some players prefer a smaller grip size (including wraps) on there short irons?

 

Thanks. Just experimenting this season with changing grip size. Every pro tells me something different. Oh you need 3 wraps, oh you need a midsize, oh go with what you like and feels comfortable...

The way that tour players get their grips wrapped is different from a lot of work that I see.

 

Most Tour vans wrap them with 1" wide tape, and spiral down the shaft, instead of using the 2" wide tape and just going length-wise down the shaft.

 

The goal here, is to build up the thickness of the tape, and the shaft tapers down from it's butt thickness.

 

So +6 wraps would give you an idea of how much overwrap Ernie has on his grips, but the tour van guys usually use calipers to measure the butt thickness of the tape before the grips go on.

 

I used to have Mickey Novak, out of Lake Nona do my clubs, and incidentally he's the same guy that's been doing Ernie's work for years and years, because Ernie lives out of Lake Nona. However, I'm sure he's get's some stuff straight from Callaway that might be done a little differently.

 

Anyways.. I don't recall Ernie's sizes, but my hands are pretty similar to his, and I was getting .680" for my left hand, and .730" for my right hand. This is the total thickness of the shaft+grip tape.

I've played in a number of PGA Tour events, multiple majors and numerous Nationwide Tour events. I've never seen tape "spiraled" on a single club coming out of a tour van either for me or for other players. Just my experience........

How much oversize is +6 wraps? Is that still smaller than a midsize, I assume?

If I am not mistaken, Midsize is typically + 1/16" oversize.

Each wrap of tape adds approximately 1/64", so 6 wraps would be 6/64", which is 1/32" over midsize.

I have XXL gloves and have been playing Jumbo Lamkins for 6years. I also have size 16 shoes and you know what that means........... I HAVE A...............HARD...................Time buying shoes!!!! :wub:

What I have found confusing is the core sizes of different midsize grips are not all the same.

Lampkin midsize 1/16 lists a core of .580 and Golfpride midsize 1/16 list core size as .600.

Does that mean if both grips are installed on a .600 butt diameter shaft the Lampkin will

be .020 bigger than the Golfpride.

Got a couple of his wedges, they have about 5 i would say, maybe even 4, there not as big as you would imagine... The shafts are also quite soft but then they are wedges so might not be the same for his irons... They also are standard length from what i can see...

I haven't seen one club come from a truck with 1" tape, that comment is very wide of the mark. Your right in saying alot of players like the taper of the grip reduced, but that isn't achieved by spiralling tape.

My June Golf Digest just came in today, Ernie is this months WITB

 

As far as his grips go it says: "Built up reminder (ribbed) Golf Pride Tour Velvet"

Doesn't say how much they are built up however.
