How to convince it is my swing that causes problem

Hi

My handicap is 13 and I am so-so at everything. Drive 240-250, irons not very consistent, short game OK, putting not bad, etc.

So I am telling I am by no means a consistent swinger.

 

Now, one thing I consistently do is that I hit balls very close to hills of my irons, so I hit occasional shanks also. But honestly I am not sure if I have to change my club length or if I have to change my swing. My swing is kind of flat.

 

Any opinions?

I can assure you that your swing motion is very consistent...

 

It is your results that are inconsistent...

 

Have a qualified instructor who is also a qualified club fitter to take a look at you...

You could also "cheap" out and fiddle with ball position. You might just be standing a little too close to the ball on your iron shots. There is definitely something in your swing that's causing it. Trained eyes are always helpful.

 

Try addressing your irons with the ball towards the toe of the club . . . I used to get way too steep on my iron shots because I just happened to stand a little too close . . . once I inched away a little my swing "slotted" much nicer on the way back and the irons worked themselves out.

How is that "cheaping out" if he truly is standing too close to the ball? Poor setup can screw up a lot of things right from the get-go.

Huh? The two go hand in hand. The more consistent (i.e. repeatable) ones swing, the more consistent the results. The ball doesn't know anything but the moment of impact, and the only thing that can change that is ones swing.

Most golfers' swing motion is very consistent, it might not be very effective however.

 

Think about the guys you play with. You could probably recognize their swing from a distance, couldn't you?
