Help Me Find a GPS Please!

I’m a rangefinder guy, and know nothing about GPS, but want to buy my wife one for Christmas.  She is a casual player, so it doesn’t have to be too elaborate.  I’m considering some kind of watch, but would like to hear opinions on those and other options. She has an older Busnell Phantom now, and likes it, but I would like to upgrade for her.

She could start with downloading a gps app on her smartphone. I have used GolfShot for a long time and think it’s a really nice app. If you really want to go with a  gps watch, then I would probably look at the ShotScope G5.

The Garmin Approach S10 GPS watch may be a good option for your wife. I picked one up this summer and I'm very pleased with it. Very basic features - scorecard, distances to hazards, layups, and front/middle/back of green. It weighs almost nothing and although it's a bit smaller than an Apple Watch the screen is totally readable, even in bright sunlight. Since I am not big on stats and trying to simplify my golf life as much as possible, this was the ideal solution. At CAD$200 it was a bargain compared to some of the other options out there.

I've been wearing a Garmin VivoActive SQ for several years. It's simple, has golf GPS (if you download the courses) and also does lots of other that I really like. Tracks heart rate, stress levels, workouts, tracks distances for runs and bike rides, etc. Looks like an Apple watch but a fraction of the price and no fees. Connects with the phone quite smoothly so I get all my notifications on the watch and can set the phone aside while doing things instead of having my phone on me at all times.

I had a S60 garmin for a while and ran into issues with it holding a charge. Decided I didn't need anything that fancy and picked up a S40 on sale. Has all the basic features you need, and has been a great watch. I can usually play two rounds on charge and still have battery left.

My wife loves her Garmin S70 watch, wears it when not playing golf, instead of the Rolex.  We compared its accuracy to my Garmin Approach z82 Laser; it's spot on.

Bushnell Phantom 2, I picked up one mid year for $99. Can't believe I didn't do it sooner, simple to use, front, middle and back numbers of the green. Does have a few other features.

 

I have a rangefrinder as well, numbers are within +/- 3 yard. Simple convenience of the P2 is why I prefer it over the rangefinder. The only thing the P2 doesn't that most rangefinders have is slope.
