How does your club or league allocate points for a ranking?

Recommended Posts

I'm revising point allocation for our summer league ranking so I'd like to hear about different ways in your leagues or clubs.  We're planning to allocate points three times a week for two months and the idea is that at the end of the summer there's a wide bunch of players with a chance of winning the ranking.  Is it possible?

At my club there are 15 weekly competitions (at your own tee-time with your own choice of accompanying players, not necessarily taking part in the competition). You may take part in all of those 15 but only 8 best results are taken into account.

Points are awarded to 30 best players, 30 for winner, 29 to 2nd,.., 1 pt for the 30th. At the end of the season points are summed up and the person with most points is the ranking nr 1.

Our men's league plays on Tuesday, make your own tee time.  It takes the best 12 scores for the season.  You must play at least 15 of the 20+ weeks to be eligible for the season-ending shootout.  The top 10 scorers make it into the shootout, one player is eliminated over each hole of the shootout until a winner is crowned.

I see positives and negatives to this approach.  The negative, a single winner isn't decided by play over the entire season.  But a positive, competition for the last couple of shootout spots can be pretty fierce over the last 2 or 3 weeks, while the very top position is often a bit of a runaway.  Another positive, 10 players have a chance to win the final competition, and its a good spectator event for those not in the shootout.

Our league uses a Stableford quota system, but you could use a standard stableford, or simple net stroke play.  We have handicaps ranging from scratch to 30 or more, and it seems we get a wide cross-section of abilities in the shootout.

We have separate weekly competitions for scratch and handicap. IMO necessary to get more participants.

Yeah, every group is different.  I'm not sure we'd have enough players who would want to play off scratch.

image.png.9dda1ca1631523ed16d6de9acb1385da.pngIn St. Louis, the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Assn. awards a Player of the Year in five divisions: men's, senior men's, women's, Southern Illinois men's and Senior Southern Illinois men's.

Each of these divisions has a list of regional and national tournaments (USGA tie-ins) for which wins and top places receive points. This link here features the Player of Year Points System for all five divisions. The five POY divisions shown here are for the better amateur golfers, with restricted entry by HDCP.

image.png.8355e107f07e35eed15793acb89ce22f.pngAlso, MAGA sponsors the Imperial Metropolitan Amateur Series. The series is for everyday golfers who are willing to play by the true rules of golf.

The series features six one-day events scattered from May to September, with a two-day championship in early October. Players get points and money if they score in the top half of the division, plus ties.

Most older Am Series regulars also play in the District Senior Amateur Championship.

To the left is an example a divisional results tableau from a 2023 one-day event; names are redacted for player privacy.  This would be a good system to use for an in-house league system to award and track points.

The Am Series divisions:

  • Open
  • Net
  • Women's Net
  • Senior Open
  • Senior Net
  • Super Senior Open
  • Super Senior Net

The six one-day events yield both prize money and season points. The points are critical for the Am Series championship. In pre-COVID days, the top 16  points holders in each division qualified for the Series championship (5 points for showing up could be critical back then).

Since COVID broke, however, we get maybe a dozen players in each division. So, if you want to play, you can get a tee time even if your points are low.
