Wedge setup question

Recommended Posts

PW is now 42.5 and have space for three wedges. I really love a vokey 56m as my go to wedge around greens and within 100 yards. Have two other wedges to fill. The only downfall is it’s not great for high lofted landing chips. I don’t like the m grind in 58 or 60 though.

If you want to go with a high lofted wedge like a 60, then your only option would be 48, 56, 60. If you wanted to get more creative and try something new, 46, 52, 58. Something you might want to consider is going with a high bounce 60 to give you more options out of bunkers and in wet conditions, and a 46F for better full shots. I would say having different bounce options are more important than having specific loft gapping as long as you can control your in between distances.

I always was a 60-56-52 guy and would have my irons bent weak to 4 degree difference, 48 pw, 44 9 iron, up to 20 degree 3 iron.

I've since changed to a 58-54-50 and my new pw stock loft is 44 (so a full club longer than previous), 4 degree difference up to the 7 iron, then 3 degree difference to the 3 iron (stock Titleist 150 lofts). I can hit all the same shots that I could with a 60 with a 58, so I feel like I've just added a little distance overall to the same setup.

Will have to test that these lofts don't get bunched up yardages and adjust accordingly, but I prefer irons to woods so I think this will suit me.

I jump from 52* to 58* right now and it's been good for me, but I'm no a wizard around the greens with a zillion different shots I use.  KISS

Game the T150's as well and made the same switch on the wedges. I've found I really prefer the 54 now as it's a reliable 100yds versus having to feel like I really shut down the 56. Picked up another club on the top as well instead of going 48-52-56-60

Can you give us the rest of the bag makeup and "normal" carry yardages?  I have a suspicion and I'd love to see if I'm right or a complete noodle.

If you are keeping that 48 degree mizuno gap wedge... then I think a traditional 52, 56, 60 makes total sense.

If you must get rid of a wedge to keep both of your 4 utility/hybrid clubs 😁 - I'd can the 52. At that point you can probably just get a comfortable inside 100 yardage with the 48, 56, 60.

I’m not going to play the set gap wedge. And just play 48 56 and 60ish. I think it’s weird to play different brand of wedges. Thinking of taking a 60T grind and bending it two degrees weak to increase the bounce.

You could go 48 and 52 since the 56 is the go to around greens and within 100 yards.

Or get a 54 but for me you must be happy then playing short range bunkers with your lob wedge

8 degrees feels like a pretty significant jump. Do you hit a lot of different shots with the 48 then?

My ability to control wedge distances would be my strength. I can hit a 48 anywhere from 125 to 90 yards

Just bought a set of i530s. PW is 42, and UW is 47.

So ended up getting 52/12, 56/12 and 60/8 in the Ping S159s.

Feels strange carrying five wedges, but the PW is really a 9-iron.

What’s the strongest iron and loft? Did you not fancy the claim loft option?

Longest iron is a 5-iron at 22 degrees. Then 4-hybrid, also at 22 degrees.

Didn’t fancy anything longer like a 4-iron.

I would say, the loft is the last thing I choose wedges.

1. bounce option

2. launching window

3. carry distance

I'm going from 52-56-60 to Maltby Max Milled 54-58 with an OEM set gap wedge of 48.  I have a Maltby TSW DRM 50 if I have any gapping issues.

Making things more simple.  Less to think about other than execution of the shot.  Not what club to use.  I've been better focusing making a more variety of shots from a club rather than a club for specific shots.  If that makes sense.

I know! Looked at Blueprint S recently they feel great but not a million miles from my A56 when you look down and the lifts aren’t either…… shall I?

Wow, yea, they have a similar profile.  My age is showing when I can remember when the Ping Zing were the new releases.

Play more traditional lofts to get 3-4 degrees between clubs. That always has helped me. I don't care about distance I just want to hit my numbers regardless of what it says on the bottom of the club.
