Callaway's New J-Grind

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I recently made an impulse purchase of a JAWS Raw Full Toe J-Grind sand wedge (that's a mouthful) after seeing one in a local golf store. I hadn't seen any wedge before with quite the same sole shape and it just checked all my boxes for things I feel are helpful on a sole grind.

It's very wide and full across the toe.

Tons of heel relief.

Both heel to toe and front to back camber.

Lots of chamfer on the "pre worn" leading edge.

Plus, I'd kind of been wondering if a high toe/full face groove wedge might be good to have for certain situations.

It's surprising the J-Grind has been virtually ignored on GolfWRX, far as I can tell from searching. All those sole features do exactly what I'd hoped they would and the entire thing as a package is almost a cheat code for my entire short game.

Great out of soft bunkers or for longer bunker shots, both of which challenge me because I don't generate a lot of speed on those shots. The huge toe is awesome for toe-down chipping. For in-betweener 30-40 yard pitch shots it seems to do "use the bounce" as good as any wedge I've ever tried. And on full swings, the one knock might be it's a little shorter than the loft (56 degrees) would typically produce but nothing extreme. It makes up for it by being uber-forgiving of slightly heavy contact and in particular the heel relief lets me get by with being steep on a full or nearly-full wedge shot without digging in and flipping the face closed.

Anyone else had good (or bad) results from the J-Grind wedges?

In the past I've given the Vokey K-grind a couple thorough tryouts. It's OK from bunkers but not the miracle worker for me that other people have found. And that huge, bulky sole does skid along the ground on heavy swings pretty well. But it is nowhere near as versatile or forgiving as this J-Grind. For me, at least.

I’m with you. Do not know why it has not caught on as much as others but I have been trying all sorts of wedges and the J grind in 58 is excellent. It does a lot of things well but is particularly good out of bunkers and tight lies around the green. I like it more than Vokey K grind or Callaway W grind as it is a bit more

versatile.

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 10.5 w/Diamana TB 60S

PXG GEN6 5 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Yamaha RMX VD 7 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Callaway Mavrik Pro hybrid (22) w/Aldila Tour Blue 85 stiff hybrid

Wilson Staff Model CB 5-G w/DG s300 shafts

Edel T grind 54 w/Nippon 125 wedge shaft

Fourteen RM-12 58 w/Dynamic Golds400

Axis1 Rose putter, 34 inches

Even a very basic little 20-yard pitch shot from a tight-ish lie, with the K grind I absolutely have to keep the clubface square. Opening it up just a little causes all kinds of trouble.

The J-Grind for as bulky at the sole looks will open up 5 degrees or so and play normal. Guess that's the heel relief.

I'm not big on playing really open-faced shots but I do like being able to set up just that tiny bit open on a lot of shots.

I just got one to replace my old Full Toe with the C grind. I need to put some more time in around the green with it because right now, I'm definitely preferring the old C grind. I'm hoping I just have to regrip it to match the old wedge. For some reason, the new Full Toe went from saying "In Stock" with a standard grip to "5-7 days" when I switched to anything midsize, and I didn't really have the patience.

How does the j compare to the x?

im looking to pickup two new jaws raw wedges in 54 and 60.  I currently okay the 54 in k or s grind and 60 in m.

I had a JAWS wedge from a couple generations back that I’m pretty sure I remember correctly being the X-grind. I really liked it, but it was thinner and not in the same universe of forgiveness as this J-grind sole.

X is much more a good-player’s workable, finesse sole. J just glides across the turf or stays on a even keel in bunkers unbelievably easy.

The pictures that I’ve seen line are not giving me the views I want.  If you can post a couple or three, that would be great.
