Need help with Driver being Inconsistent, Draw to High Hook

Recommended Posts

Hi All, Looking for some guidance on tweaking that last little part of my game that's been plaguing me since i was playing on the high school golf team 20 years ago. Always have been inconsistent with driver, decent iron player, great around the green typically.

Some stats: 10 Handicap,  Left handed,  Driver swing speed -  Average 110-115 but when being a dummy creeps up to 120-125. 6foot1, play X Stiff Hzrds Yellow - Titleist TSR2 (Brought down 9.25deg *i believe -C4 Setting). Natural ball flight is mid height draw. Will post video once i hit the range today or tomorrow.

So recently went to a swing coach and they told me to bring the ball forward in my stance, while it has helped eliminate the left side of the course (Fade/Push fade/Slice) i'm still having a hard time not completely snapping a draw into a hook. Typically they are not low hooks or duck hooks rather they start straight and just sail right for a good 20-40 yards. I natually swing from the inside and have had some success with shallowing the swing and trying to be good on plane, if i bring the speed down and shorten the downswing it seems to help quite a bit but i'm still having a hard time finding consistency there.  Ball position is just inside heel but sometimes if i put the ball lets say at the toe  i get a decent result and it feels like it contacts better and allows a better transition but again not consistent, not sure if this makes sense or not.

I feel like i'm almost there but just still being too inconsistent on the tee stops me from really being confident on the tee. Any initial thoughts or drills i can try on the range to figure this out would greatly help.

Video 2, 3 wood hook

video 3, slight hook

Video 4, slight hook
Video 5, slight draw off toe

Okay, so your grip is very strong, your stance is very wide and you slide your hips.

Can you see how far your hips have moved away from the target in relation to the two figures in the background?

Can you also see your spine angle at the top as a result of that. You need to work on your pivot and hip action.

You then move MILES forward in transition which can only leave you stuck with your right arm pinned to your chest and your left elbow behind you. You have no choice but to use your hands really actively to square the face. There’s your inconsistency.

Ok thanks.

Will try to be a bit more neutral on the grip and see how that goes.

The movement has actually helped me be more consistent, where if I try to eliminate it I find I am casting and I get duck hooks.

Any specific drill that you would recommend I take with me and work on.

To be honest, the videos I shot yesterday I would say it was really close to what I would want. I only had a few hooks and most of them were laser beams. I’m just wondering if it’s a fluke or one of those days that I was hitting well regardless of the movement in the swing.

I mean, it’s up to you what you do with the information - afterall, I'm just some dude on the internet, so caveat emptor - but you have the potential to shoot much better scores with some tidying up.

When you say “the movement has helped me be a bit more consistent” what do you mean? Do you mean the big slide? That’s going to help because you were in an untenable position at the top. The problem with it is that it’s a big move that’s hard to time and you’re getting stuck. Stuck is never good and it always depends on timing to play well.

The fundamental problem is perception. You have a big move into your trail side and then a huge move into your lead side in transition. There’s almost no pressure on your front leg until you transition, where a good golf swing is already pressuring the lead leg at P2.

See how at the top of a properly pressured and pivoted swing it looks like the golfer is already moving into the lead foot at the top? Also the spine is angled away because the tailbone has recentered?

Compare this to yours above.

Watch some AMG videos on pressure shift and pivot to get a better understanding of this process. You’ll likely hit the ball further, better and without the effort you’re putting in now.
