Ernie Els working with Butch Harmon

Butch is good about that, meeting a player once for a second opinion or advice. If the player feels its better or helps, then it's up to them to decide what to do. Harmon has more than enough $$, reputation, business etc. that he doesn't need to poach other instructor's students. They usually come to him and ask for help. He is also a stickler for making sure that the other instructor is OK with it first (remember the story of another instructor trying to 'steal' Tiger away from him). When Justin Leonard switched to him from Randy Smith, he called personally to discuss it. When Leonard decided to go back to Smith, Harmon actually sent him all of the swing videos they had of Leonard while they worked together.

In Els' case, just a blip. Usually, the Golf Channel and other sites would jump all over it if it's more than that (i.e., Mickelson). He's a brash guy, but he gets the job done.

Ernie needs to quit changing his game from week to week. He needs to stick to SOMETHING. Maybe he'll develop some consistency again.

To answer your original question:

David Leadbetter is doing a Scrooge mcDuck style backflip into an indoor pool full of gold coins.

And he feels fine. :)

It took me about 30 seconds but when I got it I literally LOLd for about 5 minutes. That's hilarious!

On a related note (Butch) I could have sworn I read a few years ago that he doesn't bill his tour players...they pay him what they think he's worth and he always does fine. Anyone know if there's any truth to this?

Butch gets lots of endorsement money because of his tour players not sure how he charges them. Not sure he cares

I am sure his school is smoking busy

He probably considers it a tradeoff

No doubt. Just being able to say "I teach ___ and ___ and ___, etc." would probably book his "school" 12 months out of the year. I just found it interesting that the guys on tour didn't have a set rate (like Pelz charges) either by the hour, year, day, etc.

Makes him a little more approachable too, I would think. Instead of "Hey Butch, how much for you to check out what I'm working on?" it can be "Butch, would ya mind watching me hit some balls?". Not that the uber rich care how much $ it will cost them, but the perception is that of a more approachable person.

A friend of mine went to Vegas to see Butch and definately got charged. He was a Nationwide (Buy.com) Tour player at the time. I don't remember the exact amount for sure, but I want to say he spent around $500 to see Butch and was able to stay to practice.

He went to Vegas and ONLY left down $500 AND got to see Butch?

Tell him I need 6 numbers and a mega ball... :)

i was at a seminar today with an instructor who teaches tour players... and he was asked what he charges... in a round about kinda way he said he's told players to pay him what they feel he's worth and he trusts that they would be fair.. but he said some make a percentage of earnings (1 to 5 %)... some charge per hour.... also added that he's had a student earn a couple million and not pay him...

I think he may have to learn to hit more of a fade.........and start being his easygoing self.

To me......Ernie is all about pace.................I like that he wants to challenge but to me all this business about this 3 year plan etc. etc. did not convince me. I thought it seemed contrived...............especially for Ernie. Like he is trying to force the issue. Like something a psychologist told him to say.

+ hero shots only when necessary. I see him as more of a play it safe plodder. Consistent.........avoid big mistakes.....etc.

I could be wrong.

My 3 cents.

Some of the guys in that top 50 are not worthy of being there and the amount some of them charge is ridiculous mind you if someone is willing to pay it and their diary is full who am I to say....

Ernie could do with altering his backsing slightly from this inside and then up takeaway that gets the club working too flat in the 1st move and then he lifts is arms up his bofy to get the club to the top from here the arms are out of synch with his body due the amount of run off he has had with his arms relative to his body.....this causes hin to have to slow in the hit and time the rekesae hence the double crosses that he hits often when trying to hit the fade a lot of this relesae is caused by what he does in the 1st move and then the lack of synchronisation.

Cheers Dan

I like to see the guys that actually build the player: We all know of one guy on this forum who has really given back.

Those are the guys I hope that push the media hype teachers away however I still believe the top 125 not only protect the sub par players but also the sub par teachers. I think not enough young players are getting into the field. I heard a comment from one of the announcers " he is the first" player under 25 to win well how many are actually in the field???????????????

crazy

The PGA TOUR is becoming more and more of a "closed shop" every day, week, month and year.

Cut it back to the top 80 or 60 even fullly exempt the next year. Everyone else qualifies. But get rid of that silly 19 rounds in 2 days Q School. 72 holes over 4 days is plenty for the final stage. Everyone from 61-125 is exempt to the final stage, everyone 125-150 exempt into the "next to last" stage (you'd probably have to have one more stage to facilitate this type of qualifying tournament) and everyone else starts at the beginning. TOUR Championship two weeks after the PGA (or a week after the Ryder/Pres Cup if it's in the US...2 if it's in international territory) and then the exempt (1-60) guys get a few months of an "off season" while the rest try to get their cards back.

Sorry for the hijack.
