Back Fusion Surgery

recovery

Not too much about recovery time after back surgery, anybody out there had the surgery? How long after 'til you started playing golf?

In May 1989; I underwent a bilateral spinal fusion (L4 to S1). After the surgery; I was advised that "my golfing days were over!" During an annual re-examination in 2002; I was informed that I could attempt to play golf; and that "my body would let me know when to quit." I started playing again with great trepidation and the belief that I would surely re-injure my back. However; I also realized that if I were going to play again then it was imperative that my core muscles be strong (always necessary to avoid a devastating set back). Succincly; I began to participate (vigorously) in a Yoga program. Long and the short; I still experience periodic back difficulties and varying degrees of pain; BUT I CAN ONCE AGAIN PLAY GOLF!!! I broke my back in 1999. L4 to S1 receiving damage.

I'm not fused, but had about as much surgery back there as possible without being fused.

Still play golf...I took about 2 years off before trying again.

I agree with the previous poster about yoga. The best thing I've ever done.

My swing has changed and I don't hit the ball as far anymore, but the lack of length has forced me to concentrate on accuracy and putting.

I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. :clapping:

I don't know if you have had the surgery yet, but I was advised to get it done with two ruptured disks and other issues L1 thru L5.

Both surgeons told me I would not play again. They BOTH referred me to a chiropractor that specialized in some different techniques not just the standard crack and pop, as a means to possibly avoid surgery.

The chiropractor got me on feet (took 3 months) and back on the course playing.

I do have back pain and flare ups, but he always seems to get this back under control with the Graston, Art, Traction and Flex work he does to me.

Well, Its been 3 full days since the surgery and I can honestly say that I'm amazed. I had a discectomy on my L5S1 nad "X-stop" titanium implants inserted between my L3L4 and L4L5. The previous sharp leg paint hat I have had for the last 3 years is totally GONE. The only think I'm expierencing is still the trauma from having the muscles cut through to get to to my spine. For those of you that may have been fighting lower back pain, please do yourself a favor and look into having the "X-STOP" procedure done. http://www.back-pain-online.com/treatments/xstop.htm For those of you who actually know me...know the trouble I have been going through the last 3-4 years and this has been nothing but "LIFE CHANGING"!!!

Spinal fushion was TOTALLY out of the question.....too risky and playinggolf wasnt guaranteed!!! The doctor said I should back on the course in 3 weeks!!
